Neither Bonds or Clemons came close to being elected. Unless there is a major shift in the opinion of steroids, neither one will ever get in. Without steroids, both would be 1st-ballot shoo-ins. No question.

Yeah, they'd be shoo-ins IF they had the same career they had without the roids.  But, take away the roids and who knows what kind of career they would have had ... they could just as well have been barely above average, and even above-average players don't get in.  See Craig Biggio and Mike Mussina from the latest balloting as an example.

They were both solid All-stars before they blew up into superhuman physiques. I think Bonds would have got in without roids, provided he was able to stay injury free over the course of a career. Clemons was a hard thrower early in his career, it's more difficult to say how he would have done without roids. They both clearly (to me, at least) benefited by maintaining strength & endurance much further towards the end of their careers than most other players.

Biggio will make it eventually, there are some writers who will never vote a guy on his first ballot unless they're an all-time great like Cal Ripken or somebody like that.

My understanding was that Mussina won't come up until next year? I heard that, could be wrong though. Personally I think he's a solid pitcher but not HoF quality.

The bottom line about Bonds and Clemens is:

We don't know if they would have sustained success without steroids.  And yes, they maintained strength and endurance much further towards the end of their careers ... BECAUSE OF ROIDS!!!  :)

We'll just never know if they were good enough to put together HoF careers without their steroid use.  We can speculate all we want to, but we just don't know.  It's definitely tragic for the game, because they were good, likeable players before all the roid fallout.

Barry Bonds should get in solely based on how he was able to grow the size of his cranium from the days he was a rookie with the Pittsburg Pirates to when he actually retired. Steroids turned Barry Bonds into a Blockhead ala-Gumby.

Yeah, I never could understand how every pitch didn't get drawn in by the gravitational pull of his melon.

a shocker

  what hypocrites

all those fat lazy writers made a fortune and ate free during this era

Writers make a fortune and eat free during all eras ... None of those dopers should get in before Pete Rose.

the ballparks were packed aND tv ratings were off the charts

the owners and writers knew players were juicing and they all benefited from it

newspapers are dead in this era pal

pete rose should be in also

the bwaa should not be allowed to vote players in any longer

they abused their position

What because you do not agree with them?

I grew up a Giants fan and still follow them (I would say the Rays have been my fav since they began much later) and even I cannot make excuses for Bonds. I thought Bonds was the most dominant hitter I had ever seen and I dislike most writers but still cannot disagree.

Another smazza prediction failure.

Barry Bonds without Roids = Andre Dawson.  Good to great player who would not have gotten in.
