Big East presidents to meet Sunday to discuss future

By The Associated Press

Published: September 28, 2011

HARTFORD, Conn. — University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst says the presidents of the Big East member schools, which includes the University of South Florida, will discuss the future of the conference at a meeting this weekend.

Herbst says the meeting in Washington on Sunday is a confidential gathering for conference presidents only and will not involve other university officials.

Herbst wrote: "We have to talk about the future and how to go forward as a strong Big East."

The meeting is the second called after Syracuse and Pittsburgh announced earlier this month they are leaving the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy confirmed earlier this week that UConn has expressed interest in joining the ACC if it expands to 16 teams.

In addition to USF, schools in the Big East are Cincinnati, Providence, Connecticut, Rutgers, DePaul, Seton Hall, Louisville, Syracuse, Marquette, Notre Dame, Villanova, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

Please, please convince Rev. Jenkins for ND to step up and save the league.

I think the football schools were the only ones that met the last time.  This will include the BB schools.  I think we all know how that's going to go.

That one had ADs and members of the Big East office there... this one is for presidents only. This is more a kin to what you saw when the Big 12 ousted Bebe.

The 12 year-old inside of me thinks the term "the BM" is funny.

ok-  wonder if this will have the same outcome.

or maybe a meeting to official seperate the non-football schools from the football schools so that the football schools can add additional programs easier.

I doubt it, we could cut ties with teams like Marquette, Depaul, and nobody would notice. However, losing St. Johns, Georgetown, Nova, etc. would be a huge hit in basketball both in market and in quality of teams. The Big East will always keep some level of respect if it has decent football (which it will with WVU, USF, TCU) and the clout of those basketball schools.
