USF's Love eyes a 2010 return to playing field

Senior wide receiver A.J. Love suffered the injury during South Florida's spring game April 18.

By SCOTT CARTER | The Tampa Tribune

A.J. Love is still hobbling around on crutches following knee surgery last week, but the USF receiver has started rehab determined to return for his senior season.

Love suffered the injury during South Florida's spring game April 18. With the Sept. 4 season opener more than four months away, Love remains hopeful he can work his way back onto the field next season.

"Right now, all I can do is to try and get my muscles strong," Love said Tuesday. "The best-case scenario would be that I'm ready to go at the beginning of the season. It's kind of unlikely, but that would be the best-case scenario."

Most ACL tears such as the one suffered by Love require at least six months of rehab. In Love's case, he also had a deep bone bruise around the knee. Love suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the 2008 St. Petersburg Bowl and returned the next season.

"This one was a little more serious because I had a bone bruise on top of an ACL tear, so that's something else that has to take time to heal," Love said.

Love caught 26 passes for 489 yards and four touchdowns as a junior. In three seasons, Love has played in 33 games, starting 19.

If everything goes perfectly and it takes 6 months to get to full strength, he could be back november.

I remember watching that play and it seemed to me that he got injured by a late hit. I wonder what the chemistry is like between those two?

It would be great to see this guy back this year.

But wouldnt he be able to get an extra year of play time if he DIDNT return this year at all?

He should follow a Grothe plan and he'd be back in shape in no time.

I think he can petition for extra time if his multiple injuries span multiple seasons.  Based on percentage of season missed.  If our season is in the crapper by Nov, and I were Skip, I'd hold him back until next year.

I hope we get to see him this fall.
