LB Wilson signs free-agent deal with Chargers

USF middle linebacker Kion Wilson, passed over in this weekend's NFL draft, has signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers and will report to minicamp on May 6.

"They're short at middle linebacker, and they run a 3-4 defense, so that's two spots I can step in and contribute at," said Wilson, who led the Bulls with 105 tackles as a senior and was named a first-team All-Big East selection by the league's coaches.

Wilson said he also talked extensively with the Bills and Seahawks, but made the call to try his luck with San Diego, whose front office personnel had talked to him at the NFL combine workouts in Indianapolis. Wilson had hoped to be drafted, but with the long odds that low-round draft picks can face to make a team's roster, being a free agent allowed him to pick an optimal situation from across the league.

Wilson is the sixth member of USF's rookie class to link up with an NFL team, joining a record five Bulls draft picks -- defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (Giants), safety Nate Allen (Eagles), cornerback Jerome Murphy and George Selvie (Rams) and receiver Carlton Mitchell (Browns).

Quarterback Matt Grothe could be joining that group soon, as his agent, John Phillips, said Saturday evening that he's working to find the best match for Grothe as a rookie free agent.

Sounds like a decent fit. Though he's not gonna be anything other than special teams this yr.

Kion made Rivals All-Undrafted team for 2010

LB Kion Wilson, USF

BUZZ: Wilson had 105 tackles as a senior and always seemed to be around the ball, earning All-Big East mention. But his lack of speed and marginal agility mean most NFL teams think he only can be a backup at best. His pass-coverage ability was a big issue.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
