Shankweiler expected to coach USF o-line

Steve Shankweiler, a top assistant on Skip Holtz's staff at East Carolina the past five seasons, is expected to be named as USF's offensive line coach early this week, completing Holtz's initial Bulls staff.

Shankweiler, 57, who was on the South Carolina staff with Holtz in 2004 and followed him to ECU, was not among the three Pirates assistants initially named to Holtz's USF staff, but was a candidate for the Pirates' head coaching job, having worked under four head coaches in 15 seasons at ECU. He was offensive coordinator or co-coordinator for all of Holtz's tenure in Greenville.

Shankweiler, who has also coached at Cincinnati and Georgia Tech, spent much of the past month since Holtz's hiring at USF at home in North Carolina recuperating from hip surgery. Holtz has not confirmed his hiring or any positional details of his new staff.

Other updates on Holtz's new staff, which should be announced this week:

-- Carl Franks, who has worked as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator the past six seasons, is expected to move into an administrative non-coaching role, but will still be involved in the Bulls' recruiting efforts. Holtz has said his experience and relationships in the state were invaluable during the two-week rush before signing day as the Bulls finished up its 2010 recruiting class.

-- Larry Scott, a USF alum who was co-offensive line coach in 2009, is expected to be tight ends coach, returning to the position he held in 2007-08. Scott interviewed for the tight ends job at LSU earlier this month but is expected to return to the Bulls, where he's been a top recruiter the past two seasons.

-- Offensive positional roles: Todd Fitch, who was Holtz's co-coordinator with Shankweiler the past three seasons, will be USF's offensive coordinator, and will be listed as running backs coach. Peter Vaas, who was offensive coordinator at Miami (Ohio) last season, will be quarterbacks coach. Phil McGeoghan is expected to return as receivers coach, with Shankweiler stepping in to coach the offensive line. Fitch will be able to work with other positions as well, as graduate assistant Steve Bird, who coached USF's tight ends last season, will also work with the Bulls running backs.

-- Defensive positional roles: Former Marshall head coach Mark Snyder will be the defensive coordinator and will coach USF's linebackers, with former ECU assistant Rick Smith coaching the Bulls defensive backs. After having Kevin Patrick coach the entire defensive line the last two seasons, the Bulls will go back to having two coaches split the line, with Patrick coaching defensive tackles and former ECU assistant Vernon Hargreaves coaching the ends.

Interesting that the O-Coordinator will get the RBs instead of the QBs.  I also always wonder why the defensive line gets split more often.  Is there that much of a difference between coaching ends and tackles?  It seems like you'd split the O-Line before you split the D-Line.  But I'm a baseball guy.

Interesting that the O-Coordinator will get the RBs instead of the QBs.  I also always wonder why the defensive line gets split more often.  Is there that much of a difference between coaching ends and tackles?  It seems like you'd split the O-Line before you split the D-Line.  But I'm a baseball guy.

The techniques of the 2 DL positions are very different...much more than OL positions. I can understand splitting them up especially because they are more "individual" positions where the OL works more as a whole unit and has to learn blocking schemes together
