Twin guitar harmonized solos(non-processed), extended soloing, tempo changes. An honest to god thrash album from metallica. It's like a gift from the gods... Rick Rubin is behind this. It's somewhat refreshing to see that guitar playing is still alive and well.http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=601171

The said thing is, St Anger could have been the one. It had some nice riffs. Something went wrong on that one...The new stuff I heard has the sound of Justice and MoP. Just a bit more modern, less raw... The tone, structure and mix are pretty good. The best thing they ever did was pick up Rob Trujillo of ST and IG. He is an incredible musician on an often understated instrument. He does more to the band's sound then even Cliff Burton. It's more about Rick Rubin vs Bob Rock. Slayer vs Motley Crue. They should have never took the bait on Bob, but then again they wouldn't be billionaires. Rubin just does things to artists. The recording get a certain energy/edge. Look at all the careers he has revived or started.
