Bower turns attention to South Florida

Associated Press

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Mississippi already avenged one road loss from two seasons ago. Now the Golden Eagles want to do it again.

Southern Miss (2-0, 1-0 Conference USA) is looking for its first win in Tampa on Saturday when it plays at South Florida (2-1, 1-0).

It's the Golden Eagles' last chance to win a conference game at Raymond James Stadium, because the Bulls switch to the Big East next season. South Florida beat Southern Miss 16-13 there in 2002 in the Golden Eagles' only previous trip there.

"We didn't make the plays we had to make to win the (2002) game, but I thought we played hard," coach Jeff Bower said Monday. "They are a good home football team. You've got to be ready to play and be on your 'A' game every week. We'll have to this week."

Southern Miss has won 10 straight Conference USA games and hasn't lost a league contest since falling at Tulane two years ago. The Golden Eagles avenged that loss with a 32-14 rout last week, turning three Tulane turnovers into 20 points and receiving 118 rushing yards from Anthony Harris.

Southern Miss led 14-6 at halftime and put the Green Wave out of the game with 18 straight points in the second half. But Bower bemoaned the Golden Eagles' second straight slow start on offense; Southern Miss failed to score a touchdown in the first half of its season-opening 21-17 win over Nebraska.

"That's two games in a row that we've really started off slow," Bower said. "I don't know what we can do. It wasn't anything Tulane was doing. Maybe we had trouble adjusting to some of the defensive things they were doing. We've got to get a better effort out of our scout team to give us a better idea of the speed of the game."

Bower said even though Darren McCaleb missed two extra points in the Tulane win, he isn't ready to give up on him for freshman Britt Barefoot.

"I'm not concerned with us missing the extra points," Bower said.

Kickoff on Saturday is 6 p.m. CDT.

"They are a good home football team."

Is he trying to imply we suck on the road?

Thats a message for his players.  We need more Andre Hall in this one, to keep turnovers down early.

We cannot turn the ball over this game.  Sorry to say but if we play like we did againsst TCU we are  going to lose this game.  I expect our discipline will be horrible as usual but if we can control Turnovers we may have a shot.

USF must send USM and Bower back to Hattiesburg with the spanking they so richly deserve!  Hope his comments haunt him the whole time we are moving on to bigger and better things in the Big East.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
