Well... considering FSU was an INDEPENDENT they pretty much had no choice, right?  They had to play 11 or 12 non-conference games every year... I am betting Bobby would prefer to play teams at home, but could not convince people to play in Doak.

Bowden could of scheduled a ton of home games vs so-so to bad teams...but he wanted to play the BEST...knowing that if FSU could be the best (even on the road), his program would receive  TON of press for it.

That's why Bowden and FSU signed a deal to play FIVE straight road games at LSU...with ZERO in return. (FSU ended up going 4-1 in that 5 game series...all in Death Valley).

That's why Bowden and FSU signed a deal to play FOUR straight road games at Nebraska...with ZERO in return. (Believe FSU ended up going 2-2 in that 4 game series).

Bowden/FSU signed a 2 game series for both games to be played in Columbus, OH vs Ohio St (believe FSU went 2-0 in those games).

Bowden/FSU signed a 2 game series with both games play in Ann Arbor vs Michigian (believe FSU split that series).

Bowden could have loaded up more home games...but none of the Top 10/Top 20 teams wanted to visit Tally...so he went to them.

Can't beat'em if you don't play them.

Those were different times and that philosophy doesn't work anymore.  It's not like USF is not scheduling good teams. Auburn was proof of  this last year and the upcoming series with Miami. As USF grows in stature, we'll get more respect. Until then we have NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR.....especially to UCiF fans delivering a tired, and over told history lesson.

Couldn't agree more, especially about ucIF fools that don't understand that things that happened thirty years ago in college football have nothing to do with today's game.  The world has changed, and things aren't done that way anymore.

No doubt times are different today...especially considering all the $$$$$ teams can make by having 7 and 8 home games per year.

Short history lesson was just to inform JimUSF...as I knew intelligent posters like yourself knew the information I posted in advance and thats why my response was directly toward JimUSF.

Knight_Light,

Interesting info about FSU going to LSU so many times. So what you're saying is that UCF should sign a similar series to play USF at Raymond James 4 years straight with no return games? It would help your program get taht respect.:)

KL -- You missed the point.  FSU was an independent, they didn't have a lot of scheduling options so they HAD to play road games... that's not to say they didn't play ANY top teams at home (1978 Houston, 1980 Pitt,

Moreover, if you look at their schedules prior to 1991, 75% or more of the teams were fellow independents... and there weren't that many independent teams in the "Elite"...

Finally, FSU played a lot of crappy teams overall... it's not like they had 5 home creampuffs and 6 tough road games...  FSU played one or two tough games per year, the rest were nothing to write home about.

In 1979, FSU went 11-0 in the regular season: Southern Miss (6-4-1), Arizona St (1-11), Miami (5-6), Va Tech (5-6), Louisville (4-6-1), Mississippi St (3-8), LSU (7-5), Cincy (2-9), So Carolina (8-4), Memphis (5-6), & Florida (0-10-1).  FSU went 11-0 against teams that went a combined  46-75-3...

Perhaps you'd rather look at 1987, the first year FSU finished in the AP Top 5 - a streak that lasted some 14 years.  FSU went 10-1 in the regular season, only losing to eventual national champion Miami (12-0). Their wins: Texas Tech (6-41), ECU (5-6), Memphis (5-5-1), #8 Michigan State (9-2-1), Southern Miss (6-5), Louisville (3-7-1), Tulane (6-6), #7 Auburn (9-1-2), I-AA Furman, & Florida (6-6).  These are better opponents, but Miami has been home-and-home forever, and the Michigan State and Auburn games were parts of series where those teams played in Tallahassee...

So, let's put this all to rest.  FSU would not play anyone, anywhere if they had the choice.  They played a lot of average teams at home and on the road so they could win a lot of games.  On occasion, they would play a bigger named team... and preferred home-and-home series whenever possible.  (Over 30 years, all you can provide for examples a handful of games against two programs??)

Oh, and LSU and Nebraska played very few OOC games on the road... and even more rarely against Independent programs (even SW conference team Rice only received 2-1s...).  So it's no wonder the made FSU come to them.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
