Why Bearcats?

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats were born on Oct. 31, 1914. The creation of the name was sparked by a football game with the University of Kentucky Wildcats, a star UC player named Baehr, a creative cheerleader and a talented cartoonist.

During the second half of that hard-fought football game, UC cheerleader Norman "Pat" Lyon, building on the efforts of fullback Leonard K. "Teddy" Baehr, created the chant: "They may be Wildcats, but we have a Baehr-cat on our side."

The crowd took up the cry: "Come on, Baehr-cat!"

Cincinnati prevailed, 14-7, and the victory was memorialized in a cartoon published on the front page of the student newspaper, the weekly University News, on Nov. 3. The cartoon, by John "Paddy" Reece, depicted a bedraggled Kentucky Wildcat being chased by a creature labeled "Cincinnati Bear Cats".

The name stuck, but not immediately. Following Teddy Baehr's graduation in 1916, the name dropped out of use, at least in print, for a few years. On Nov. 15, 1919, Cincinnati played at Tennessee. Cincinnati Enquirer writer Jack Ryder's dispatch on the game was the first time that the major media called UC's teams "Bearcats." From then on, the university's teams were regularly called Bearcats.

What is a bearcat?

The word first appeared in print circa 1889 as a synonym for the giant panda. "Bearcat" is a simple translation of the Chinese word for panda-xiong mao-which means "bear-cat". By 1895, naturalist H.N. Ridley reported that the binturong-a large cat from Malaysia-was known as the "bear-cat". There is a binturong at the Cincinnati Zoo which frequents UC games.

UC's athletic teams sport a logo in which the letter "C" has been converted into a paw. The logo is a federally registered trademark of the University of Cincinnati and may not be used for any commercial or noncommercial purposes without written permission of the University of Cincinnati Licensing Program (513-556-3483).

Stay tuned for all your Bearcat kibbles and bits of information....

Black Team Rallies for 23-14 Win in Bearcat Bowl II

Dustin Grutza completes 13-of-18 for 100 yards and two touchdowns

April 26, 2008

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team wrapped up its 2008 spring season with Bearcat Bowl II on Saturday evening as an estimated 10,142 fans visited Nippert Stadium to view the future of Bearcat football. The Black squad stormed back to defeat the Red, 23-14, in a contest that was aired statewide on Ohio News Network.

The Red held the lead until 1:17 left in the fourth quarter when Demetrius Jones (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame) connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marshwan Gilyard (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast) to give the Black a 17-14 advantage. Gilyard also scored on a 33-yard strike from Zach Collaros (Steubenville, OH/Steubenville) in the fourth quarter to pull the Black within four. The Black capped the game with a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown by Brandon Underwood (Middletown, OH/Ohio State), who picked off the Red Team's CHazz Anderson (Pickerington, OH/Central).

The duo of Collaros and Jones led the Black team and finished a combined 11-of-20 for 227 yards and no interceptions. Jones racked up a game-high 136 passing yards. Gilyard finished the game with a game-high 171 receiving yards for the Black. Defensively, Nick DeFillipo (London, OH/London) recorded a sack in the second half and totaled six tackles for the game for the Red. Robby Armstrong (Murraysville, PA/Franklin Regional) and Craig Carey (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) each recorded seven tackles for the Black.

Wide receiver Armon Binns (Pasadena, CA/Pasadena) put the Red squad on the scoreboard first with a six-yard touchdown grab from Dustin Grutza (Maysville, KY/Mason County). Kicker Brandon Yingling (Mason OH/Mason) connected on a 38-yard field goal to give the Black Team its first points of the game at the 10:47 mark of the second quarter. Anderson hit a 32-yard strike to tight end Ben Guidugli (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) in the second quarter to record the longest play of the first half.

The UC defense was impressive, as Carey finished the first half with six tackles while defensive end Connor Barwin (Hazel Park, MI/U. of Detroit Jesuit) recorded the only sack of the half and forced a fumble in the process.

The Bearcats open the 2008 season at Nippert Stadium on August 28 against Eastern Kentucky.

Mauk's Request for Reconsideration Denied

Quarterback plans to appeal to NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee

April 30, 2008

CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk had his request for reconsideration on his original waiver for a sixth year of eligibility denied by the NCAA, head football coach Brian Kelly announced today.

The request for reconsideration was based on new information submitted regarding a foot injury he suffered at the beginning of his high school career. Prior to enrolling at Wake Forest University, Mauk required an additional operation on the foot in the spring of 2003.

The NCAA's decision to deny the appeal was based a lack of contemporaneous medical documents from Wake Forest.

The Mauk family will continue to work with Ben's former college coaches and Wake Forest University medical staff members to collect the needed information.

"This is just another step through the NCAA process and is nothing out of the ordinary," said Kelly. "The Mauks will continue to work through it. The next step in the NCAA process will give Ben his first opportunity to speak directly with the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee."

The Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee is a panel of athletics directors, faculty representatives, and conference commissioners who has the authority to determine all matters pertaining to the policies and procedures for the reinstatement of eligibility for a student-athlete. The committee will need a two-third majority vote to reinstate Mauk's eligibility.

Under NCAA rules, the UC Athletics Compliance Office will act as the conduit between the Mauks and the committee. Cincinnati has already submitted the appeal, which will be heard by the Reinstatement Committee, and expects the timetable for the response to be expedited.

UC Football Unveils New adidas Uniforms at Bearcat Bowl II

1992868.jpeg

April 26, 2008

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics, in conjunction with its shoe and apparel partner, adidas, unveiled its new football uniforms at its annual spring game, Bearcat Bowl II. The new uniforms, which include exclusive color schemes and numerals, are the result of two month of consultation with adidas, the football coaching staff, and the department of athletics.

"These new uniforms are eye-catching and will give the Bearcats a distinctive look that no one else in the country will have," said head coach Brian Kelly. The players who have seen the uniforms are excited to debut them when we take the field for our opener in August. We appreciate the hard work put in by adidas to turn these uniforms around. They are a true partner to the University of Cincinnati."

The most noticeable addition to the uniforms will be the new "cat scratch" logo that was specially designed by the adidas design team in Portland, Ore. The four scratch marks coincide with UC's nationally recognized "C-Paw" logo which features four claws atop the "C." This new mark has already been rolled out as part of the "Claws Are Out" season ticket campaign which debuted in March.

Beginning this fall, all 18 UC teams will be outfitted exclusively in adidas footwear, uniforms, training apparel, and accessories. Cincinnati is part of a select group of universities that have similar agreements with adidas, including Notre Dame, UCLA, Tennessee, Indiana, Nebraska, Michigan, and Wisconsin among others. adidas also has marketing agreements with the NFL, MLS and an 11-year exclusive all-league partnership with the NBA.

"Games are not won and lost by the uniform a player wears. Games are determined by our student-athletes, our coaching staff and our supportive fans in the stands, said UC Director of Athletics Mike Thomas. "However, we want to give our student-athletes every advantage we can and by using adidas, we are putting them in the best possible cutting edge equipment and uniforms available."

Cincinnati Athletics and its retail partners and adidas have worked together to have the new jerseys available in the stores this weekend. The new jerseys will be available at the University of Cincinnati Bookstore located in the Tangeman University Center (TUC) and the DuBois Bookstore located just off campus at 312 Calhoun Street.

New Uniform Technical Details:

(1)Combinations, there are six possible uniform combinations - black jersey/black pants - white jersey/white pants - white jersey/black pants - black jersey/white pants - red jersey/white pants - red jersey/black pants.  The red jersey combinations will be worn annually as part of the Ring of Red game. This season's Ring of Red game will be Saturday, Nov. 22 vs. River City Rival Pittsburgh. There is no change to the helmet.

(2)One-of-a-kind design - No other school will have the exact same style uniform design, including numbers and cat scratches.

(3)Innovative - the new uniforms feature updated looks and the latest performance fabrics producing a skin-tight fit which minimizes grab for opposing players.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
