This is a real bear cat

Now you see why they rather be associated with pandas.

I pride myself on being a pretty masculine guy.  I'll pick up a snake with a rake and drag him/her away from my house or kids play area.  I'll also drunkenly attempt to interact with the alligators I encounter on a golf course.

However,  if I saw that ugly thing in the picture hanging on a tree in my backyard while taking out the trash one night, I would brown my shorts and scream like a little girl for my daddy.  That thing is freaking unsettling.

look at those beautiful soulful eyes

Redshirts: Second in a series on Big East newcomers

Friday, May 30, 2008 | Posted by Darrell Laurant

CINCINNATI

In Cincinnati, the class of redshirt freshmen is more like a redshirt army -- 20 of them, providing depth at nearly every position.

Quarterback Chazz Anderson, DT John Hughes and DB Drew Frey are the youngest Bearcats whose names were mentioned most often by coach Brian Kelly during spring practice.

Anderson, a 6-0, 205-pounder from Pickerington, Ohio, seemed to catch the second-year UC coach's fancy most often, especially after he completed eight of nine passes for 98 yards in one scrimmage.

"He is competing for the starting quarterback position," Kelly said.

And so, theoretically at least, is another redshirt freshman, Zach Collaros of Steubenville, who threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Marshawn Gilyard in the Black & Red spring game.

Certainly, no one can say that Anderson and Collaros aren't winners -- together, they went 80-7 as high school quarterbacks.

It's probably unrealistic, however, to expect Kelly to elevate either one over former starter Dustin Grutza for the opener with Eastern Kentucky. For one thing, Grutza waited patiently for a year after losing his job to transfer Ben Mauk, and Anderson and Collaros have four years to make their mark. So unless Grutza is either injured or slumps dramatically, chances are 2008 will be another chapter in the young quarterbacks' learning experience.

Of course, that's all assuming Mauk doesn't get another year of eligibility from the NCAA, although that seems doubtful at this point.

Two other intriguing redshirts underwent position changes this spring. Scott Johnson went from DB to running back (averaging 6.5 yards a carry in the Red & Black game), and Adrien Robinson -- obviously a bit oversized for a wide receiver at 6-4, 250 -- was moved to a more logical niche at tight end.

"At first, I was afraid I might have to do a lot of blocking," Robinson said.

He'll learn. Redshirts always do.

You would have more if you were in the Big East.  Just ask the Octonian.

IDK what the Octonian is but I believe they are in the BEAST. Hence the scouting report.

That would have been funny to you if you knew what the Big East Octonion was.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
