UT-MARTIN FOOTBALL STAFF GETS SEC FLAVOR WITH NEW ASSISTANTS

April 6, 2008

MARTIN, Tenn. --- UT Martin head football coach Jason Simpson has filled two vacancies on his staff with two former Southeastern Conference graduates assistants. Simpson has hired Gerad Parker, a former Kentucky player and GA, as the Skyhawks running backs coach and former Mississippi State GA Anthony Blevins as a defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator.

Simpson also promoted Marcus Satterfield, the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, to associate head coach.

Parker, a former wide receiver, spent this past season as an offensive graduate assistant at Kentucky. He also worked with the offensive scout team. Before returning to his alma mater, Parker was an assistant coach at Raceland (Ky.) High School, guiding receivers and defensive backs. In 2006, Raceland was 11-2 and advanced to the third round of the Class A playoffs.

He was a four-year letterman for Kentucky (2001-04). His best season came as a senior when he caught 15 passes for 168 yards. Having overcome numerous injuries during his career, Parker's teammates voted him UK's Most Inspirational Player following his senior year.

He was a three-year member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor roll and in 2004 was voted second-team Academic All-District IV by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He was selected for the Frank. G. Ham Society of Character by UK Athletics.

After his playing career, Parker stayed on at Kentucky as a graduate assistant for spring practice in 2005 before accepting the coaching and teaching position at Raceland.

Born in Huntington, W.Va., Parker became the all-time leading receiver in Kentucky history at Lawrence County High School with 238 career receptions, 4,814 yards and 52 touchdowns.

He is married to the former Kandi Brown, who was an all-state basketball player and a member of the 2000 West Carter High School state champion team. Brown played at Morehead State.

Blevins spent the past three seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at Mississippi State, following two years at Meadow Creek (Ala.) High School and one year at Alabama State.

He is a 1998 graduate of Alabama-Birmingham where he lettered four years as a defensive back for the Blazers.

Blevins played one year of professional football each in the AFL and XFL. He is a native of Birmingham, Ala.

Satterfield enters his third season on the Skyhawks staff. Before coming to UT Martin, he was an assistant at Western Carolina for two years and a wide receivers coach at Richmond for a season.

The East Tennessee native served as an offensive assistant for the 2002 and 2003 seasons at the University of Tennessee. He was the interim running backs coach for the 2003 Peach Bowl. Among his responsibilities at Tennessee were opponent film breakdown data entry; offensive scouting reports; and kicking team scouting report. He also worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers, and was in charge of offensive and special teams personnel substitution on game day.

Satterfield's first coaching job was a three-year stint at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He worked with the offensive line, wide receivers and quarterbacks for two years. He was promoted to wide receivers coach for the 2001 season.

Satterfield was a three-year letterman as a wide receiver and punter for East Tennessee State University from 1995-1998. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from East Tennessee. He also played point guard for Chattanooga State Community College during the 1994-1995 basketball season.

FOOTBALL TEAM SET FOR 2008 CHALLENGES

June 8, 2008

MARTIN, Tenn. - The 2008 football season is fast approaching and the Skyhawks, under the direction of third-year head coach Jason Simpson, want to return to postseason play for the second time in three years.

The Skyhawks schedule is loaded with challenges. For starters the team will play 12 games this season, two against teams that were nationally ranked this past season - South Florida and Auburn.

The Skyhawks open the year Aug. 30 in Tampa at South Florida and then travel to Auburn on Nov. 8. This is the first time in school history that the Skyhawks have played a Big East team and a Southeastern Conference foe in football.

The Skyhawks will open the home portion of the schedule with back-to-back games, Sept. 6 against Baker University from Kansas and Sept. 11 versus Concordia from Selmer, Ala.

Other home games include Homecoming set for Oct. 4 against Tennessee State; Oct. 11 against perennial Ohio Valley Conference power Eastern Illinois; Oct. 23 against Jacksonville State; and Nov. 22 against defending OVC champion Eastern Kentucky.

The home slate includes two Thursday night contests, Sept. 11 against Concordia and Oct. 23 against Jacksonville State and LSU transfer quarterback Ryan Perrilloux. The Jacksonville State game will be televised live on ESPNU. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks closed out their 2007 season with three consecutive wins and victories in four of their last five OVC games to finish a respectable fourth in the league standings.

Offensively, the Skyhawks were one of the best in the OVC and among the nation's most potent attacks. Led by All-American tailback Don Chapman, the Skyhawks were ranked among the top 35 teams in the nation in eight offensive statistical categories.

The Skyhawks were 13th in the nation in total offense, averaging 430.55 yards per game. They were 19th in the country in scoring offense averaging 33.36 points per game.

In the OVC, the Skyhawks were ranked first in six offensive stat categories (scoring, total offense, total offense per play, total offensive yards per game, total offensive touchdowns and pass efficiency. The Skyhawks were ranked second in the 10-team league in three more offensive stat categories (touchdowns scored, rushing offense and yards per rush.

While Simpson is faced with replacing Chapman in the backfield this season, he can rely on junior quarterback Cade Thompson from Maryville, Tenn.

Thompson was named to the OVC's All-Newcomer team in 2007. He completed 81-of 124 passes (65.3 percent) for 1,034 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Skyhawks also return All-OVC selections Ray Williams (DL), and Kevin Bannon (OL).

Chapman, from Marietta Ga., completed his four-year career at UT Martin by rewriting the school's record book. He rushed for 5,017 career yards and scored 296 points. He is one of 14 college football players ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a year for four consecutive seasons.

PRESEASON FOOTBALL MAGAZINE PICKS SKYHAWKS TO WIN OVC TITLE

July 17, 2008

MARTIN, Tenn. - Phil Steele's College Football Preview magazine picked The University of Tennessee at Martin to win the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

The magazine is on sale at various retail outlets until Oct. 31. The magazine includes 100 pages of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) coverage.

"While UT Martin slipped from 9-3 to 4-7 there are some key indicators which show they should have better success this year," the magazine states in its forecast on the Skyhawks.

Among those indicators are 16 returning starters, the third most in the OVC. The Skyhawks also return quarterback Cade Thompson who threw for 1,034 yards and completed 65.3 percent of his passes.

"Talent wise I can understand how we could be picked to win the league," said Jason Simpson, the Skyhawks third-year head coach. "Now if we play like we did at the beginning of last season; or if we are not focused; or if we should suffer from injuries then we could finish sixth like we did a last year."

The magazine also named wide receiver Roren Thomas, offensive guard Kevin Bannon and defensive lineman Ray Williams to its preseason All-OVC first team. Defensive lineman Nate Wilson and defensive back Dontrell Miller were named to magazine's All-OVC second team.

The Skyhawks will open fall camp Sunday, Aug. 3 and kickoff the season Saturday, Aug. 30 in Tampa against the University of South Florida.

SKYHAWKS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN OVC RACE BY HEAD COACHES, SIDS

July 22, 2008

MARTIN, Tenn. -- In a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head football coaches and sports information directors, Jacksonville State University has been picked as the 2008 preseason favorite in the nine-team league. The University of Tennessee at Martin was predicted to finish fifth in the conference.

Although Jax State was tabbed as the favorites, the votes indicated the pollsters predicted this year's race should be extremely tight, as the 18 first-place votes were split evenly amongst three schools. JSU received six first-place votes and were followed by 2007 OVC Champion Eastern Kentucky, who was picked second and also received six first-place votes.

Eastern Illinois, who was a 2007 at-large selection for the FCS Playoffs, also garnered six first-place votes and was tabbed third.

The three teams were separated by just five points, as preseason favorite Jacksonville State ended up with 113 points, Eastern Kentucky followed with 111 points and Eastern Illinois received 108 points. It marked the closest preseason vote in Ohio Valley Conference history.

The order of finish was rounded out by Tennessee State (84 points), UT Martin (69), Tennessee Tech (55), Austin Peay (50), Murray State (36) and Southeast Missouri State (22).

Two years removed from an OVC Co-Championship, UT Martin was tabbed fifth this season. Skyhawk head coach Jason Simpson has eight offensive and eight defensive starters back from a team that came alive at the end of last season.

After a rough start (the team lost five games by a touchdown or less), UT Martin rebounded to win its final three games and four of its final five contests of the season. UTM returns both quarterbacks - Cade Thompson and Dexter Anoka - who combined for 2,403 yards and 16 touchdowns in splitting the signal calling duties in 2007.

One of the duos favorite targets - junior wide receiver Roren Thomas - also returns after a season where he grabbed 39 passes for 553 yards and six scores. Thomas was a preseason All-OVC selection this season.

"We certainly have the talent to finish first this year, but I think some of the coaches question our ability because we lost two very productive players in running back Donald Chapman and return specialist Jessie Burton," Simpson said.

Chapman rushed for 5,017 career yards and is one of 14 players in all of college football ever to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons.

Burton played both offense and defense for the Skyhawks and returned punts and kickoffs.

2008 OVC Predicted Order of Finish

1. Jacksonville State (6 first-place votes) 113

2. Eastern Kentucky (6) 111

3. Eastern Illinois (6) 108

4. Tennessee State 84

5. UT Martin 69

6. Tennessee Tech 55

7. Austin Peay 50

8. Murray State 36

9. Southeast Missouri 22

(8 points awarded for a first-place vote, 7 for second, etc. - Coaches and SID's could not vote for their own teams)

Based on one of the articles posted, it looks as though between our and Auburn's game with them, we'll be funding their basketball program for almost a decade.
