He was beat out by the media's favorite Colt McCoy.  And Colt's Stats were a little better.  BUt still great!!!

Way to go Matt!!

Matt Grothe

South Florida | RS Freshman

QB | 6-1/205

196/307 for 2,495 yards, 14 touchdowns, 14 interceptions

Colt McCoy

Texas | RS Freshman

QB | 6-3/195

191 of 278 for 2,262 yards and 27 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions.

Maybe they can play each other in a BCS game next year.

Matt is a better runner than McCoy.

I'll take Matt over Colt every time

Postseason Honors Start to Roll in For USF Football Players

TAMPA, FLA. (December 1) -- Matt Grothe has been named The Sporting News Big East Freshman of the Year, and he joins teammates George Selvie and Chris Robinson on the publication’s Big East all-Freshman team.

Grothe, from Lakeland, Fla., has shattered the USF freshman quarterback records and enters USF’s bowl game with 2,495 passing yards and 607 rushing yards. He is the top freshman in the country in total offense with 3,102 yards. He has thrown for 14 touchdowns and run for nine more.

Selvie, a defensive end from Pensacola, Fla., is tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 12, and he leads all USF down linemen with 76 tackles. His 5.5 sacks are tied for second most, trailing only Robinson. In USF’s win over seventh ranked West Virginia, Selvie returned a fumble caused by Robinson for a nine yard touchdown.

Robinson, a defensive end/linebacker from Bunnell, Fla., leads the Bulls with six sacks despite not starting a single game. His four forced fumbles tie a USF single season record, initially set in 2005 by Ben Moffitt.

What an improvement from the beginning of the year when our D line was not the best.  Coaches did a heck of a job developing these players.  And still Josh Julmiste may be the best.  Bright bright future for the Bulls.  Did anyone else notice a lack of SEC players especially for the number of teams they have.  Alot of Big-10 and BE.  Nice.

..  Bright bright future for the Bulls.  ...

Last time we had a Freshman All-American (Nicholas) ... things didn't slow down ... I don't expect anything to slow down in 2007-2009 either.

Expecting to have more FR All-Americans next year also  8-)

And ALL-AMERICANS next year too !

Future soo bright ... gotta wear  8-)

I really think that the only reason Colt McCoy took the honors over Matt was because of the interception numbers.   With stronger play from our young O-Line in the future, those numbers will drop and TD receptions go up.  The mind boggles at what his stats will look like in his senior year.  Oh to dream of Heisman ::)

I think it's only fair that Matt's rushing numbers be included. I think Matt's running is what differentiates him from the average QB.

ET,

yes thanks for adding Selvie and Robinson, I was in a hurry to get it posted that I didn't grab their info.

Kyle,

I agree the rushing threat is a real big factor.
