(December 1) -- Matt Grothe has been named The Sporting News Big East Freshman of the Year, and he joins teammates George Selvie and Chris Robinson on the publication’s Big East all-Freshman team. Grothe, from Lakeland, Fla., has shattered the USF freshman quarterback records and enters USF’s bowl game with 2,495 passing yards and 607 rushing yards. He is the top freshman in the country in total offense with 3,102 yards. He has thrown for 14 touchdowns and run for nine more. Selvie, a defensive end from Pensacola, Fla., is tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 12, and he leads all USF down linemen with 76 tackles. His 5.5 sacks are tied for second most, trailing only Robinson. In USF’s win over seventh ranked West Virginia, Selvie returned a fumble caused by Robinson for a nine yard touchdown. Robinson, a defensive end/linebacker from Bunnell, Fla., leads the Bulls with six sacks despite not starting a single game. His four forced fumbles tie a USF single season record, initially set in 2005 by Ben Moffitt.

Coaches did a heck of a job developing these players. And still Josh Julmiste may be the best. Bright bright future for the Bulls. Did anyone else notice a lack of SEC players especially for the number of teams they have. Alot of Big-10 and BE. Nice.

With stronger play from our young O-Line in the future, those numbers will drop and TD receptions go up. The mind boggles at what his stats will look like in his senior year. Oh to dream of Heisman :
