LAKE GIBSON 41, CHAMBERLAIN 6

Powell Rambles for 210 Yards, 3 Scores

By RICHARD CONNERS

Ledger Correspondent

LAKELAND -- The Lake Gibson Braves find themselves in familiar territory in more ways than they care to be after demolishing Tampa Chamberlain, 41-6, in the second round of the playoffs Friday night.

Playing in front of a small home crowd of about 900 at Virgil Ramage Stadium, the sixth ranked Braves' Bilal Powell powered past the Chamberlain defense for 210 yards and three touchdowns.

...

And Powell may be the answer to Lakeland's star running back, Chris Rainey.

... drive that included nine rushes for 45 yards from Powell to bust the game open.

The drive ate up most of the quarter and was culminated by Powell's second score from four yards out to give the Braves a commanding 20-0 lead at the half.

Both teams haggled for field position to start the second half only to see Powell break up the monotony with an 83-yard touchdown sprint that took very little time off the clock and gave the Braves a 27-0 lead.

The Ledger(Lakeland):

Lake Gibson (10-3) didn't have much success offensively. The Dreadnaughts held the Braves to just 2.4 yards per rush -- 80 yards for the game on 34 carries. Bilal Powell, who finished the season with 1,916 yards, was held to 48 yards on 19 carries and left the game with an injury.

Hopefully the injury is not serious.

From what I hear it was his hip and it is NOT serious.  He's a great back and hopefully he takes care of his grades the rest of the year.  It was too much Naughts D though on Friday night.

Louisville is after Bilal really hard.  USF needs to jump in the mix or they are going to lose one of the top 5 backs in the state.  There are a lot of us who would love to see him stay locally.

That's great ... never saw him play, but you gotsta like his #'s !

I feel good we'll land the RB's we want, already have 2 committed(1 FB).

Ponton disappointed me, although he didn't get the carries he should have, but ... coaches see more than us.

Maybe Plancher's injury is pretty bad, it's not always strong enough after 1 year.

Dorsey and Samuels are the unknowns, with Dorsey given some early shot as a True FR.

And we saw what kind of depth we had at RB in 2006  :P

Powell from Lake Gibson is a good talent.  He played DB last year but has moved to tailback.  It's not a lock that he will be a qualifier.

Any info on his grades ... also, somebody more familiar can confirm, but seems he has the frame to be a WR, RB or DB.

RS years are good for discovery.

He will probably play DB @ the next level but who wouldn't want to see him at RB after the season he had @ Lake Gibson this year.  He was in the same defensive backfield in 05' with Chris Duvalt who is currently @ Illinois with the zooker.  Powell was more physical than Duvalt and probably the better athlete.  He has some video clips on sunshinepreps.net.  Just another talented Lake Gibson kid.  It would be good to see Grothe, Davis, and Powell on the same team next year.
