I just returned from a vacation in Boone , NC home of Appalachian state University. That is a real neat campus and nice small stadium. while I was there they were giving out their 2005 D1AA football Championship rings. The whole town was celebrating and it was hard not to feel good for them.

This made kind of wish USF had stayed D1AA a little longer or had been in playoffs with a shot at championship. When USF does win a championship I hope the community rallies behind us like the people of Boone did for ASU.

Quite familiar with this area and the U ... had a friend that went there.

I am glad we moved on when we did ... too many people do not consider 1AA football, real football - unfortunately.

Tampa is too big to appreciate 1AA football ... and am sure the area will embrace the BULLS finally when we win the National Championship ... we will in our teens. Entering year 10  8)

Go BULLS !!!

The USF president who helped spear head USF football was the Pres at App State U.  Not sure if he's since retired or not.

Frank Borkowski became chancellor there after leaving USF.  He retired from that position in 2003 and took on a faculty position with their school of music.

We all owe him a debt of gratitude for getting the wheels turning that led to our football program.

I was hoping - back in the day - that we'd get a home & away with ASU. A bunch of the folks from my high school went to ASU. It is a nice, small school, and Boone, NC makes for a nice get-away weekend.

We had no alternative but to go the IA route as soon as humanly possible. To stay IAA any longer than we did would be flirting with disaster. Imagine complaining about attendance every year when YOU KNOW your opponents would be James Madison, Hofstra, Citadel....spooky, huh?!

One of these days, I want to beat the tar out of Hofstra.   ;)

Same here...when all the newbies cry "No more I-AA"  I say bring me Hofstra along with a relative of Giovanni Carmazzi; as well as that hillbilly Georgia Southern....I would savor setting them back about 100 years.

Ahh, yes.. Ga. Southern, too.

Besides those two, are there any other teams left 'unflipped' from 1-AA?

That's a very good question...I can't remember any that were "unflipped" and acted like asses from the opening  until the closing moment.  We may have unavenged losses, but none by any team as badly deserving of a payback than the two mentioned....at least from the DI-AA days.

There has been a lot of talk that Appy St might go 1-A in the next 5 years...so there might be a chance for that.

Used to live in the appalachians....beautiful area.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
