USF Baseball Cruises To 17-3 Win Over The Penn Quakers

TAMPA, Fla. (Tuesday, March 7) – Scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the University of South Florida baseball team (5-9) cruised to a 17-3 win over the Penn Quakers (0-4) on Tuesday, March 7 at Red McEwen Field. Ten USF players registered at least one hit in the team’s most productive contest of the season offensively, including Gus Fernandez and Dexter Butler, who each recorded four hits versus the Quakers.

Fernandez, who crossed home plate a career-best four times, went 4-for-6 with an RBI. Butler drove in three, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Shortstop Addison Maruszak hit 2-for-3 including his third double of the season with three RBI and a run scored. Senior Kris Howell went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while first baseman Brian Baisley crushed his first home run of the season, going 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Eight players combined for the team’s 14 total RBI.

Junior Yuri Higgins earned his first win of the season, allowing three runs while, scattering five hits over five innings of action. Nick Manganaro, A.J. Highsmith, Ryan Lau and Chase Lirette combined for four shutout innings of relief.

USF jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run by Baisley in the bottom of the first. With Howell on first, Baisley took a 1-0 pitch by Joe Thornton over the left-field fence. The home run was the second of the season for the team.

Penn took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs on four hits. The one-run deficit lasted until the fourth inning when USF’s offense took the game over.  

USF opened the game wide open with a 12-run fourth inning, registering nine hits in the inning, including an-RBI triple by Braulio Pardo. In all there were 17 total plate appearances accounting for six singles and three extra base hits. With the 12-run inning, USF took a 14-3 lead. The Bulls added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double by Butler. Drilling the ball to right-center field, Butler brought in Fernandez who was on first, giving USF a 15-3 lead. The Bulls added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 17-3.

Of the team’s 19 hits, five were for extra bases. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Bulls.

USF will its month-long homestand hosting the UMass Minutemen in a three-game series starting Friday, March 10 at Red McEwen Field. First pitch for Game One is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Then I'm not impressed.. we should have posted a shutout. Either way, we dominated this game and hopefully we can turn this thing around.
