One of my best friends in high school played rb and fs on the football team, and ran track with me. He was in great shape, and was always drinking gatorade/pickle juice and stretching ten times a day. The guy cramped up so much that he was rarely on the field in the fourth quarter. From track practice also, i can tell you that the same ppl tended to cramp up all the time, and that it had little to do with conditioning or habits.
