  • 02/20/24: Update on stadium progress and transition of campus recreation facilities
  • UPDATE ON STADIUM PROGRESS

    Feb. 20, 2024

The University of South Florida continues to move forward with planning for the new transformational on-campus stadium.  As part of an ongoing commitment to transparency with the project, USF is providing several progress updates.

Starting in January 2024 and continuing for the next few months, members of the university community may start to see some increased activity on and around the new stadium location on the east side of the Tampa campus.  This work includes traffic studies, an archaeological survey and the collection of core samples from around the stadium site.  The university does not expect that this initial work will cause significant traffic pattern changes or parking limitations.  As construction on the project gets started later this year, more significant activity involving heavy equipment will occur, as would be expected with a project of this magnitude.  Updates will continue to be provided as a more detailed construction schedule is confirmed.

The university is also beginning the process of transitioning the recreation facilities currently occupying the Sycamore Fields site where the stadium will be built to a new location in the southwest portion of the Tampa campus near the USF Research Park.  Starting in February 2024, members of the university community may start to see some increased activity at the new location as workers begin to prepare it for recreational use.  As with all aspects of the stadium project, it is a priority to minimize any environmental impacts.  Steps will be taken to retain as many trees as possible at the new recreation location, and replanting will occur in other spaces across campus to fully offset the loss of any trees during construction.

The current schedule calls for the new recreational complex to be fully operational to support activities for the spring 2025 semester, with the old complex being taken offline late in 2024 around Thanksgiving break. Throughout this transition period, the campus recreational team is diligently coordinating efforts to minimize disruptions to organized activities. While there may be a brief period, currently slated for around Thanksgiving through early 2025, when the facilities won't be available for informal activities such as pickup games or individual workouts, once the transition is finalized, USF will continue to provide students with the same array of activities and programming at the new location as was previously offered at Sycamore Fields.

USF will continue to provide updates on the stadium project as additional plans are finalized.
