TAMPA (December 19, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls (6-6) continued their winning ways on Monday night inside the Yuengling Center with a 77-70 victory over Hofstra (6-6). After an 0-5 start to the season, USF has now won four straight and six of its last seven games.

Tyler Harris led a quartet of Bulls in double digits with 19 points to go along with a team-best four assists. Jamir Chaplin posted 14 points, six rebounds and four steals. Russel Tchewa added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Selton Miguel chipped in 10 points.

"Hofstra is a really well-coached team and explosive on offense. They tested us every possession on our defensive principles," said head coach Brian Gregory. "Jamir (Chaplin), Selton (Miguel) and Serrel (Smith Jr.) each did a great job defensively on Aaron Estrada, one of the leading scorers in the NCAA, and forced him into five turnovers which doesn't happen for him. I thought our activity on the glass tonight was great after a disappointing effort of Friday, and we challenged the guys to correct that. Five weeks ago, this is maybe not a game that we win. But, you're seeing guys start to trust the system, believe in each other and really gel."

Estrada entered the game ranked ninth in the country in scoring (21.7 ppg).

It was a closely contested affair throughout the night and the teams went into the locker room at halftime tied, 39-39. Hofstra came out of the break red hot, after shooting 50 percent from the field (5-11 from downtown) in the opening half. The Pride went 7-for-8 to begin the second half and eventually built a 58-52 lead with 13:46 left in the game.

The sides continued to trade baskets before a six-point run gave USF a 62-61 edge at the 7:45 mark on a jumper by Chaplin. The Bulls and Pride traded the lead four times from there with Harris' slashing layup giving USF the lead for good, 69-67, with 2:18 remaining.

Chaplin scored eight of his 14 points in the second half, including a highlight reel putback dunk on an offensive rebound. The Bulls collectively pulled down 18 offensive boards and turned those into 19 second-chance points.

Notable

  • USF is averaging nearly 16 assists per game over its four-game winning streak.
  • The Bulls are averaging 71.75 points per game during the win streak.
  • The Bulls will seek their first five-game winning streak since January 22-Febraury 10, 2019 (seven-game streak).
  • Tchewa is shooting 73 percent from the field (30-41) over his last six games.
  • The Bulls' 24 bench points on Monday are their second-highest this season.
  • Corey Walker Jr. tallied a season-high six points and two steals.

This should be a real gimme...  NJIT had a decent team not too long ago, but now looks like they can't beat most anybody.

I guess it’s just me watching this one.  🙂

Well, here’s another team that comes in and shoots the lights out early. NJIT can’t miss over the first 10-12 minutes. Bulls keep pace early and then lead by 9 at the break. On pace for a hundy tonight.

Dominating start to the second half for the Bulls. This is fun, for a change.

TAMPA (December 22, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls (7-6) wrapped up a three-game homestand and non-conference play on Thursday night at the Yuengling Center with a 92-73 victory over NJIT (2-10). South Florida heads into conference play next week on a five-game winning streak with wins in seven its of last eight games overall.

Thursday's 92 points are a new season high and the Bulls are on their first five-game win streak since 2019. USF is averaging 75.6 points over its last seven wins.

Selton Miguel scored a career-high 23 points on Thursday while dishing out four assists. Tyler Harris matched his season high with 22 points, and tallied new season highs in three-pointers (6) and assists (6). Russel Tchewa logged his first double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-best 12 rebounds.

"We had a lot of guys contribute tonight, and played really good complimentary basketball," said head coach Brian Gregory. "This is one of the hardest games of the season to play with the holiday break right around the corner, but I was proud of our team's effort."

That effort was on full display late in the first half when Serrel Smith Jr. chased down a loose ball from one end of the court to the other and found Harris for a wide-open triple.

"That play by Serrel showed me our guys were ready to play the right way tonight," Gregory added.

USF took a 49-40 lead into halftime and closed the opening frame going 9-for-13 from the field over the final seven minutes. That effort helped the Bulls stay in front of the red-hot shooting Highlanders as both teams shot over 50 percent in the opening half. NJIT opened the game going 7-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 from downtown over the first eight minutes of action.

The Bulls used a 15-0 run in the second half to pull away and ultimately secure the win.

A three-pointer by Jamir Chaplin sparked the run at the 17:42 mark and Harris connected from downtown with 12:57 left to play to make it a 66-42 affair.

Notable

  • Thursday was the first time USF had two players scored 20 points in the same game since April 3, 2019 (Laquincy Rideau & David Collins).

  • The Bulls improve to 44-14 when scoring 70 or more points under Coach Gregory
  • USF's 19 assists are the second-most this season and the Bulls are averaging over 16 assists per game during their five-game winning streak.
  • Miguel's 10 made field goals are also a new career high.
  • Tchewa played 30 minutes, but needed just 22 minutes of game play to log his fourth career double-double.
  • The Bulls shot a season-high 54.5% from the field and 42.9% (second-best) from beyond the arc.
