Interesting idea from someone on the internet -

Quote

Is there a scenario where a trade is made between the ACC and SEC, FSU for Vanderbilt? I think the ACC is getting pretty interesting for the academic side of VU. Being in a conference with privates like Duke, Standford, ND, BC, Miami, Wake, SMU, Syracuse, and Pitt (kinda), and publics like UVA, GT, UNC, and Cal make for a much more compatible conference. If you look at size (13K), location (urban), athletics (baseball, basketball), or academics, they are an ACC school.

Getting out of the SEC arms race will allow VU to be competitive in football, spend more on its other programs, and make the athletic dept happy.

To get to 18, I vote for adding USF and VU and subtracting FSU.

On the surface everyone would be quick to think "why would anyone leave the SEC", but when it comes to this scenario, Vandy would be maybe the only school where it actually makes a bit of sense. Here was a follow up from another person -

That's a win for pretty much everyone.

An ACC without FSU, is one less loss to each of the schools.

A Vanderbilt that's been in the SEC meatgrinder all these years should do at least "decently" : )

AAU basketball school, etc.

The problem, as you note, is the money.

However, that can be addressed in several ways.

The first is some long-term scheduling agreements with SEC members like Tennessee. That's a cost that they can then avoid. Especially since espn would be on both sides of those games.

Eliminate any exit fees etc to Vanderbilt.

And limit FSU's cost to the ACC to the exit fee. And have FSU pay the same amount to to Vanderbilt. An extra $120M or so, could smooth the path, I think.

It becomes more interesting if Clemson comes along for a similar deal. That's an extra $120M to the ACC and to Vanderbilt ($240-ish each). So, if my math's right, to finish out 2036, that's an extra $20M per year to Vanderbilt.

I think that's likely do-able.

The ACC backfills with USF (and Vanderbilt).

And we're done.

Food for thought.

There is no way they do this without knowing they have a home.

But do you ever really know?  All is fair in love and football.

Right, the secret deal you have can be pulled. But, you have to have a secret deal, or promise or something. You can't be playing chicken with the idea that they hope to get a home.

FSU better figure something out fast as USF is going to continue to rise and it may put their big ten spot in jeopardy lol

I personally think it would be hilarious for them to go through all of this, pay someone over a $100m to get out of the ACC and the only invite comes from the Big 12.

IMO, the Big 12 is actually a perfect fit for FSU, culturally, academically, and geographically. I'm sure UCF would love to have them as a conference rival. Meanwhile, let's get USF to the ACC to make our Miami games more meaningful.

I really feel good about expansion/realignment now.

A year ago, we were hopeful but really only had 2 things:

Tampa's market

Potential

One year later we have:

Turned around football program.

Dominant bowl win over P4 program.

Best G5 recruiting class.

AAU Status

Turned around basketball prgram.

Signature basketball win over top 10 program on national tv.

Tampa's market

Potential

Bring it on.

We are doing everything right.  Finally.  Now just need to stay on course.  Give it a real effort and consistency though that stadium opening.
