I believe it's something like that but not exactly.  I think the most you can get is 1800 points.  That would be if you got all of the 1st place votes.

That is exactly how it works.  Notice that USC has 1619 points and 59 first place votes.  That equates to exactly 59 times 25 plus 6 times 24.  So, all the people that didn't vote them first place voted them into second.
