You have to realize that it doesn't matter what the university does... the bulk of the people go to football games for ENTERTAINMENT.

Losing football is not good ENTERTAINMENT.

Winning football is good ENTERTAINMENT.

.

Jim USF,

Brilliant comment!

You are SOOOOOOOOOOOO right!

Until a team can draw 30,000-60,000 plus fans to a SPRING GAME ( as an example of diehard "fans"), most smaller programs are looked at as "Entertainment"!

Many that choose to go to games at UCF/USF, etc...that do not have a strong connection to the Football Program, School or both, look at it as "ENTERTAINMENT".

Once both teams realize that a HUGE Majority of their local population never took at class at their school and start marketing it as an ENTERTAINMENT EVENT, it will probably take 10-20 plus years to become a "program" where people show up "regardless" who you play and season tickets sellout.

Great marketing insight.

As long as ENTERTAINMENT equals winning games, fine. You start talking about ENTERTAINMENT in any other way and I get leery.

There are some other things to consider... USF has graduated almost 200,000 people in less than 50 years -- and less than half live in the Tampa Bay area.  That means more than half move away from here -- returning home or finding a job in another metropolitan area.

The Tampa Bay area has realized that there is a brain drain going on ... young people with college degrees are moving out of Tampa faster than they are moving in.  Community leaders have begun to address this issue, and are working to develop strategies to recrtuit and retain young, educated people.

What does this have to do with our fan base? Simple... with 6000-8000 students attending games... if we can convince most of them to stay here, they will continue to attend games as alumni.  If you figure that 1,500 to 2,000 of the students are seniors (since USF has a higher proportion of upper classmen), then we should work to add them to the season ticket pool... It should not be hard to add 500 - 750 season tickets per year among recent graduates.
