October is ideal for foliage up north. But any area with water (bogs, swamps, etc.) will have trees changing by mid September. This is my favorite time of the year.

For you sportsmen...Google Salmon Fishing videos in Pulaski and Oswego, NY.  It is world class and located 30 mins north of the Syracuse Airport.  Mid September is prime time.
