Why not just pay their best 5 players and give everyone else scholarships. Where is written ALL players must payed. They could implement this many different ways. As previously mentioned, that will start to open up a lot of other issues. Once you start paying football players, even if it is only the top 5 or so, you will need to pay the top 5 female players something accordingly. Title IX will play a role in this issue at some point. I understand that there are other routes and stipends that players benefit from; but the NCAA (as is) provides some sort of oversight. So far, according to Forbes, only 14 athletic programs are turning a profit WITHOUT being subsidized, (and the P5 consists of several programs). Just in the P5 alone - how would heavily subsidized programs compete in paying players against the 14 profit producing schools? Are students, donors, and taxpayers footing the bill to afford Wake Forest the same recruiting potential as Alabama? And what if this crosses over into Basketball? Title IX? If Football, or any other athletics program wants to pay players - I believe that they should be completely independent from the University. Someone mentioned a system similar to a minor league; which is fine - if it is partitioned from college athletics.

In many schools, football supports the other programs.
