Herget Goes Eight in Bulls Loss to Georgetown

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA – Freshman Jimmy Herget pitched eight shutout innings but the Bulls couldn’t put it together at the plate in a 1-0 loss at Georgetown in 13 innings Thursday afternoon in Bethesda, Md.

Evan Ryan scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the 13th to give the Hoyas (16-8, 2-2) the series opener at Shirley Povich Field.

Herget gave up just three hits, walked two and struck out four in the longest outing of his collegiate career.

The Bulls wound up outhitting the Hoyas, 7-5, and got a 2-for-4 performance James Ramsay. Kyle Teaf went 2-for-5 while Alex Mendez, Chris Norton and Luke Maglich each had a hit for USF (13-13, 3-1).

Friday’s game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start and Saturday’s series finale begins at 1 p.m. back at Shirley Povich Field.

Don't get why they put Thomas in there. He crumbled against FGCU on Tuesday and crumbled again today. I know you need to trust your guys, but that's 2 awful outings in a row.

Terrible offense.  Better win the next two, they have to win this series.  Georgetown is always at the bottom of this conference.

Don't forget we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs in the top of the 10th and got nothing for it. Our bats are the reason we lost, Thomas just happened to be the final straw with his wild-pitches.

Two actually. The first got the runners from 1st & 2nd to 2nd & 3rd, and then the second wild pitch ended the game. It was a 1-2 pitch with 2 outs. The batter held a checked swing.

That's some serious violation

1st, we should be scoring in the 1st!

2nd, we should NEVER be behind.

3rd, a couple of wild pitches should NOT make the difference

4th, we need to never play the 9th inning at home.

Can we have some offense, please?!??!??!?!

Pitt has had more pop in its lineup the last few seasons than USF. It's sad, really, but USF baseball has been plighted with the same lack of offensive consistency the last few seasons. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it's on Prado.

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
