I think UF is being shortsighted by opposing FSU.  It makes their game a conference game and then they'd never have to leave the swamp for an non-conference game.

Agreed.  I think UF sees themselves as the premier team in the state and that FSU in the SEC would just make their competition stronger.

Though an even larger part is the idea that their big rivalry game can impact their ability to win the SEC East.  I think that Georgia, South Carolina, and UF all don't like that.  They play their in-state ACC counterparts annually, but a loss doesn't affect their standing in the SEC.

Good point.

What will the conferences look like in, say, 5 years? Here's my best guess.

Specific predictions:

***Texas A&M to the SEC (already happening)

***FSU to the SEC (with yesterday's announcement, I'd say this is all but inevitable)

***Clemson to the SEC (good fit from a cultural perspective)

***WVU to the SEC (VT has already explicitly said no, and I doubt the NC schools will be busted up, so WVU is the next mostly likely school that fits the cultural profile of the SEC. Mizzou wants the Big 10)

***Maryland to the Big 10 (In my view, Maryland fits the Big 10 profile, AAU member, etc. Will also give the Big 10 some of the DC market)

***Boston College to the Big 10 (Big 10s best bet at breaking into the NE market. Also an AAU member)

***Mizzou to the Big 10 (they have expressed interest and would be a good fit with Nebraska)

***Notre Dame to the Big 10 (I think this is inevitable with the formation of super confences)

***Texas to the PAC-12

***Oklahoma to the PAC-12

***Oklahoma State to the PAC-12

***Texas Tech to the PAC-12

***Big East basketball schools will split off, and the football participants will merge with the ACC to form the Big Atlantic Conference

***Kansas to the Big Atlantic (too good of a basketball tradition to be left on the outside looking in)

TCU? Boise? BYU?

Yeah I forgot about TCU. I think maybe that will result in Kansas not coming to the "Big Atlantic".

RE: the other schools. Big 12 exodus could affect them. If I were the PAC-16, I'd maybe take Boise/Kansas/BYU over Texas Tech, but any movement by the former Big 12 schools might be a package deal. If Texas ends up going independent, which I'd say is about as likely as going to the ACC, then that could open up two spots in the PAC-16 because Tex Tech wouldnt likely get invited by itself. So PAC-16 could take maybe Boise, BYU, or Kansas

Texas is in an interesting position. I don't know how much room there will be for independents in the Super Conference future.  UT doesnt fit into the ACC.  What does that leave?

What a coup it would be if somehow the Big East could get Texas.
