UM is not only going after Hill, but Perrilloux as well.  :-/

QB pulls his commitment

The University of Miami's California pipeline for quarterbacks appears to be drying up.

For the past few years UM has managed to convince a top-rated passer to make the cross-country trek to play for the Hurricanes, landing Ken Dorsey, Marc Guillon and Kyle Wright since the late 1990s. But the recent change of heart by Oceanside quarterback Derek Shaw will likely end that run for at least this recruiting season.

Shaw, a 6-foot-4, 205 pound quarterback rated amongst the nation's top 100 prospects, committed to Miami early in August after participating in UM's summer camp. Two weeks ago Shaw, who passed for 2,803 passing yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior, played in the CaliFlorida Bowl all-star game at the Orange Bowl.

According to Canesport.com, it was during that trip he decided the commute to Florida was too far for him to receive the family support he needs.

After speaking with coach Larry Coker on Wednesday, Shaw opened up his recruitment process. His grandfather, **** Enright, a former head coach at the University of Oregon and offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, said he's leaning toward signing with Arizona State, where he'll visit this weekend.

His de-commitment leaves UM with only two scholarship quarterbacks -- Wright, a redshirted freshman, and true freshman Kirby Freeman, who is from Texas -- on the roster next fall unless UM lands another before signing day. Guillon transferred to Alabama in 2003, and both Brock Berlin and Derrick Crudup finished their eligibility.

Having a third quarterback is critical to the team's preparation during the season because that player typically runs the scout team offense, getting Miami's defense prepared for its opponent.

Despite Shaw's earlier commitment, UM never stopped recruiting Jefferson Country quarterback Carlton Hill. But Miami was initially pursuing Hill, who passed for 1,764 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 888 yards and 12 touchdowns, as a receiver.

However, the Monticello resident wants to be a dual-threat quarterback in college and is being pursued by Purdue, N.C. State, Mississippi and South Florida for that purpose. Hill is scheduled to visit UM in two weeks.

Miami will also receive a visit from Ryan Perrilloux, another dual-threat quarterback who is considered one of the nation's top prospects. But Perrilloux, who is from Louisiana, has already committed to Texas.

Shaw is the second de-commitment the Hurricanes have had this season, following Texas tight end Martellus Bennett. UM presently has 12 public commitments for what is expected to be the smallest signing class of Coker's tenure because of scholarship limitations. Commitments are not binding until letters-of-intent are signed on Feb. 2.

The Hurricanes, which have around 17 scholarships to offer, are still in the running for nearly a dozen prospects that are playing in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which is being held in San Antonio and will air live on NBC. UM presently has commitments from two: Texas offensive lineman Reginald Youngblood and tight end DajLeon Farr.

Are either of the ones they have left any good?  or are they going to be struggling at QB?

This probably hurts USF's chances for landing Hill doesn't it?  It seems UM would place more focus on landing him.

both were Parade All Americans coming out of HS so they should be fine, Wright was mentioned quite a bit last year for challenging Berlin for playing time

Last I checked the scoreboard doesn't have a spot for current bank balance on it.
