I think a medical red shirt may be the best in this case.  We could use him next year.

Except he can't take a medical red shirt. If he doesn't play this year we'd have to hope that the NCAA would grant him a 6th year.

Exactly. A RS is always a medical ... loosely used of course.

not sure what youre getting at but you can RS without a medical reason.

I think he is referring how many talented Freshman we have that play a game or two(usually cupcakes) then get "injured" and use their red shirt after the fact. I'm sure he is well aware that you can use a RS without being injured.
