Barrington remains in jail; won’t return to Vero Beach

VERO BEACH— While his teammates practiced in the hot afternoon sun here at Dodgertown on Wednesday afternoon, sophomore linebacker Sam Barrington sweated it out in a jail cell back in Tampa.

Barrington remained in custody Wednesday awaiting a 1:30 p.m. court hearing on Thursday. Barrington was arrested Tuesday evening and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail for his latest driving-related legal trouble.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office website, Barrington was being held on two misdemeanor counts of driving without a valid license after apparently turning himself in for missing a mandatory court date scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That court date was related to Barrington’s July 28 arrest for driving with a suspended license with knowledge—a criminal offense—according to the Hillsborough County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Barrington had bail revoked by Judge Margaret Courtney.

Barrington, 19, of Jacksonville, was also arrested on the same charge a year ago. In May 2009, he turned himself in a month after he was pulled over. A university spokesman said he had a suspended license after failing to set up a court date related to unpaid parking tickets.

“We’re dealing with a traffic violation that he hasn’t handled very well when you look at it,’’ USF coach Skip Holtz said following Wednesday’s practice. “I don’t think Sam is a bad person and I don’t think he’s done anything malicious here, but this is a great lesson as far as doing all the little things the right way and being accountable for what you do.

“We’ll just have to see how all this plays out,’’ Holtz said. “We’ll find out a little bit more when we get back to Tampa. He will not be back here in Vero Beach.’’

Well, that makes sense.  Kind of weird that Barrington would miss his 1:30pm, then show up later and turn himself in.  He must have heard the judge was upset and then found a way to get back to Tampa.  A young kid not handling himself well. I suspect he sits out Stony Brook, then lines up as the #2 MLB until he can prove that he deserves to start.  Deserving to start would include clearing up this incident then making it back to practice and class.

Not so brilliant.  Let me get this straight.

So he had a bunch of parking tickets.  Didn't take care of them.  Got his license suspended.  Didn't deal with that.  Got arrested last year as a result.  But he kept on driving. Got arrested again for driving without a DL.  Then missed his court date.  And now got arrested a third time, with no bail available, because he has not dealt with tickets, no DL, arrest, a second arrest, and is missing court dates?

I am a pretty reasonable guy but this guy does not have his act together.  I am torn with what to do.  On one hand, this is a drivign infraction.  But on the other, as a Coach, you have to know when to say when, and enough is enough.  Like he did with Mike Ford.

Speaking of Ford...

AUGUST 18, 2010

RB Ford cleared; LB Barrington remains in jail

Former USF running back Mike Ford, who was arrested in Sarasota in June on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery, has been cleared of those allegations after prosecutors declined to press charges.

Ford was accused of pushing and hitting Berneta Bean, 31, who described herself as an "on and off" girlfriend and mother to two children with him. He was scheduled for an arraignment last Thursday, but that hearing was cancelled on Aug. 9. Ford, who rushed for 207 yards in USF's victory over Northern Illinois in the International Bowl in January, was dismissed from the Bulls this spring for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Ford did not return a message seeking comment Wednesday, and prosecutors in Sarasota did not return a message asking why the charges were dropped.

-- USF sophomore linebacker Sam Barrington remains in county jail for a second night Wednesday, held without bond, and is scheduled for a court appearance on Thursday afternoon relating to a July arrest for driving with a suspended license. Barrington, who is expected to be the team's starting middle linebacker but has been slowed in preseason by a lingering shoulder injury, will not be able to return to Vero Beach, where USF is holding preseason drills. The Bulls leave for Tampa after a morning practice Thursday, and coach Skip Holtz addressed Barrington's situation after practice in an interview available on GoUSFbulls.com.

"This is a traffic violation that he hasn't handled very well," Holtz said. "I don't think Sam is a bad person. I don't think Sam has done anything malicious here."

Holtz said he'll find out more about Barrington's legal problems after he returns to Tampa. Barrington has been arrested three times in the last 13 months, all relating to missed court dates and traffic problems involving driving with a suspended license.

He better keep his nose clean and let someone else do the driving.  ;)

LB Barrington gets probation on one count

After nearly two full days in jail, USF linebacker Sam Barrington is getting his driver's-license legal issues squared, getting six months of probation on one charge and an October court date for the other. The 19-year-old from Jacksonville is expected to be released from jail Thursday evening, allowing him to return to his teammates after missing three practices.

Barrington pleaded no contest to a June misdemeanor of driving with a suspended license and adjudication was withheld, with six months' probation, $289 in court costs and the understanding that Barrington will carry a valid driver's license and not be absent from classes or practices. His other arrest on the same charge from July 28 now has a disposition hearing on October and is likely to result in a similar arrangement, presuming there are no problems between now and then.

Barrington's problems have been limited to driving infractions and missed court dates, but the combination took him away from the team for the final three days of the Bulls' training camp in Vero Beach. It's unknown what if any disciplinary action he'll receive from coach Skip Holtz, but the projected starter was not included on the two-deep depth chart Holtz issued Thursday night, primarily because he had not been at recent practices.

Glad to hear he's out of there. I hope that he stays away from the steering wheel until he validates his driver's lisense and hopefully Coaches and teamates keep a close tab on him.
