BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Jawad Williams and Sean May each scored 17 points and No. 5 North Carolina gave Virginia Tech a rough welcome to Atlantic Coast Conference basketball Sunday, beating the Hokies 85-51.

The Tar Heels (8-1) won their eighth straight since a season-opening loss to Santa Clara. They scored 17 of the last 21 points to lead 41-27 at halftime, then started the second half on a 16-5 run to put it away.

Virginia Tech (5-3), overmatched inside and out, kept it close for the first 15 minutes on the strength of Zabian Dowdell's 16-point first half, but couldn't keep pace once the Tar Heels starting pounding it inside.

Raymond Felton added 15 points and Marvin Williams had 12 for North Carolina, which emptied the bench in the second half, using 14 players.

North Carolina led 71-41 after two free throws by May with 6:20 to play, and the rest of the game was essentially a demonstration of individual skills as players for both teams attempted highlight reel dunks and passes.

Dowdell led the Hokies with 21 points.

North Carolina's halftime lead came after it shot 65 percent from the field, but the Tar Heels needed the big run to erase some sloppy early play.

Playing as if victory would come easily, the Tar Heels committed 12 turnovers in the half and allowed the Hokies to get several putbacks.

Dowdell's third 3-pointer of the half pulled the Hokies within 24-23, and then North Carolina got serious, exploiting the Hokies inside.

May had 11 points in the half and Jawad Williams nine.

Let it be known that McCullum would never let USF get spanked like that in his second season as head coach. I cant stress it enough that USF is going to be on to bigger and better things in the next few years.

How many frosh is Seth starting before making a comment like that. Until UNC went on a run to end the 1st half, VaTech was playing the most disciplined ball I've ever seen a Seth team play. It looked like text book Princeton with all the backdoor cuts and running the shot clock down under six seconds. If they hit their layups and ten footers, the game never would have gotten out of hand. I missed the 2nd half... but that was my casual observation of the 1st half.

sheriff-why didn't they hit their layups and 10 footers?

seth should have an easier time recruiting in acc but va tech is still second banana to uva in basketball

Next year I expect to get spanked many... many.. times.

We wont get spanked like we did last year under Coach McCullum. Sure, we will lose alot of close games, but we wont get blown out by 30 points. McCullum is too good of a coach to let that happen again. Next year, McCullum will have even more of his players. Things will get better. Right now, USF is about to go on a three game winning streak that starts with FIU tonight.

Omni,

It is funny how things turned out in all of this. Seth making the comment about noone wanting to be a USF Bull while alot of kids want to be Hokies. Well, now that USF is in the BIG EAST, it should not be hard to win a kid over Va Tech. Would a basketball recruit want to go to Tampa or Blacksburg?? What is there to do in Blacksburg???? LOL. Seth took that Dowdell from USF, but I can tell you that it may be the last recruit that he will take from USF.
