Report: SEC Already Eyeing Six Teams For Possible Expansion

Recommended Posts

I'm not a mathematician, but how did the MUP Center squeeze 43 schools into the Top 25?

We're not tied for #28, we're more like #49 in the MUP, probably about the same, more or less, in the Carnegie list.

Carnegie doesn't rank ... just classifies into tiers.

But, within the tiers you can break it down further. For example, USF is one of only 25 public research universities nationwide that holds both an RU/VH and community-engaged designation by the Carnegie Foundation.

It is somewhat confusing.

There are 9 measures which The Center uses. So, if a school has at least one measure in the top 25 of their group then they are added to that particular list. That same school, however, may or may not have any other measures in the top 50. So, for example, USF has no measures in the top-25, but does have 5 measures in the top-50.

From the top-25 public list, RU and Cincy would certainly be ranked ahead of USF based on total measurables. However, some of the other schools noted might not.

School                            Top 25 Measures  Top 26-50 measures

University of Cincinnati - Cincinnati        4          3

Rutgers - St. U. of NJ - New Brunswick  3          6

Public University of Alabama - Birmingham  1      3

Public University of California - Santa Barbar 1      3

Public Indiana U. - Purdue Univ. - Indianap  1      2

Public University of Kansas - Lawrence    1          2

Public University of Delaware                  1          1

Back in 2003 when that USF memorandum was written USF had only one measure in the top-50.

Clearly, USF has been making great strides in upgrading its research profile and will continue to do so.

Considering this is a sports blog and you see how much we are going over academics I would think they may play a much larger role in expansion then alot think.  I mean we are sports crazies but the people deciding this thing are academic types so we may be surprised.

I just thought of this - If he is still at VATech can you imagine the reception Seth Greenburg would get the first time he stepped on the hardwood at the dome.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
