so what do you do for basketball? or would this be a football only type of merger, and there would almost be a separate entity to control football spending and such? how will that work?

this is probably going to happen if maryland goes to the big 10 and the sec expands and takes two acc teams.  Assuming 3 big east teams go to the big 10 that would leave 5 football teams left, and I see the acc picking them up and expanding to 14 teams.
