Last-Minute FG Uplifts Braves

PENSACOLA -- The rematch is on.

No. 3 Lake Gibson gets its second crack at SeffnerArmwood in the Class 4A state semifinal game, thanks to the right foot of Jacob Bloodworth.

The senior place-kicker booted a 20-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to lift Lake Gibson to a 30-29 victory over Pensacola on Friday night in the state semifinals before an estimated 4,000 fans.

The Braves (13-1) will play Armwood for the state title Thursday night. Armwood won last year's game, 29-21.

It wasn't looking good for Lake Gibson when No. 5 Pensacola scored on a two-play drive with 4:43 to play. Quarterback Adron Chambers ran for 46 yards then Courtney Jones scored on a 23-yard run to put the Tigers up 29-21 after the extra point.

Roger Frazier, however, answered quickly, returning the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for the touchdown. Up until then, Frazier, like the offense in general, wasn't having a good game.

"The long bus ride, the cold -- it affected some players more than others," Lake Gibson coach Keith DeMyer said. "It messed up the timing of the offense. Rabbit came through when it mattered."

The two-point conversion failed, and the Braves still trailed by two points. This time it was the defense that came through on Pensacola's next possession. After Chambers gained six yards on first down, Jones was dropped for a 1-yard loss on second down. On third down, defensive end Cameron McCalpin, who is normally a linebacker, broke through and dropped Jones for a 6-yard loss to force a punt.

Lake Gibson took over at the Pensacola 47 after the punt. Isaac Harris gained 12 yards on first down. Then Lake Gibson quarterback Matt Grothe, who probably had his worst game passing since his sophomore year, found Bobby Taylor for a 10-yard gain, then ran twice for 15 yards to take the Braves to the 10.

Harris, who ran for 82 yards, took Lake Gibson to the 3, setting up Bloodworth's field goal.

This wasn't Lake Gibson's prettiest game. The Braves trailed early, 13-0, and looked unable to stop the Tigers, who outgained the Braves, 390-226. The Tigers drove 53 yards on their first drive. Chambers scored from two yards out. Their second score came on a 60-yard pass from Chambers to Mitchell Mouton.

After punting on its first four drives, Lake Gibson finally got going. Grothe, whose first six passes were incomplete, connected for a 25-yard pass to Natiel Smith. Then Harris ran for 41 yards to set up a 6-yard TD pass from Grothe to Taylor.

The Braves added a two-point conversion on a busted play when Grothe hooked up with Ronald Buford. Grothe finished 8-of-20 for 93 yards.

In the second half, Harris' 19yard run gave Lake Gibson a 1513 lead. Later, Grothe's 1-yard run to cap a 71-yard drive gave the Braves a 21-16 lead.

But Pensacola answered in a game that was as close as the score indicates.

I don't know if the Lake Gibson game was on TV, but I watched the Armwood game on Brighthouse TV (Channel 47) last night. Our verbal RJ Anderson forced a fumble as a Booker guy was about to go into the endzone and then he recovered it for Armwood. Another Armwood guy we are recruiting RB Demetrious McCray had four TD's and was the star of the game. I don't know if it will be replayed.

I'm sure somebody will post the channel and TV time for the finals.

Gee, I remember when PHS used to suck, we used to beat up on them every year when I was at Pensacola Woodham
