Yes the question here is whether he could be granted a medical redshirt. He didnt take a medical redshirt his freshman year.

Unless you were hurt during your 1st redshirt, you cannot claim a medical redshirt.

I've heard of people getting a 6th year before,why not in this case?

There have been exceptions.

Jason White (QB for OKla) got a 6th year as did Rocky Ross at UCF this year.

Ross was injured early last season and was granted a medical red shirt.

He wasn't hurt his RS Freshman year, that's why he can't get a 6th year

I don't know one way or another, we'll have to wait and see, but USF compliance was able to get Grant Gregory a 6th year. They did have to argue an old injury, but if MG saw the trainers a few times hist freshman year, there may be a slim chance.
