I have no problem with the committee, I have a problem with our coaches apparently not knowing what the committee is looking for. No way we should offer a kid who then CLEARS the NCAA clearinghouse (which would get him into 90% of the football programs in the country) and then ditch him after most other schools have already slotted all their schollies. It's bad business.CJL acted SURPRISED, so that tells you he had no clue this was coming. That lack of communication is what makes us look like clowns...Makes you wonder if we determined we were so strong on the DL that they are using the academic committee as a front to eliminate a schollie to free up for another position where we aren't so deep. So in the future, we oversign knowing we can use the AC to bail us out with their mystery revelations...Functional? Absolutely. But bad way to treat people... He said he was disappointed. He knew from last year that not every kid who passes NCAA minimum requirements is assured of admission to USF. Thornton wasn't a qualifier out of high school and had to go to prep school, which already puts him as a potential academic risk compared to kids coming straight out of high school. So I'm not sure why you say he'd have no clue. He just said he was disappointed.
bigums Posted June 11, 2009 Group: Member Topic Count: 3 Content Count: 98 Reputation: 0 Days Won: 0 Joined: 01/15/2008 Share Posted June 11, 2009 The fact is now our academic committee is becoming an hinderance, and Genshaft and WOolard need to review the process. We've lost Justin Green, Akol, Thornton, another hoops signee months after it should have taken to say 'yea' or 'nea'...this will be used against us.Justin Green is where? Nobody wanted to take a shot on him and he's making his way through CC and plans to come here next year.Teeng Akol? A major project that's still far from fruition. http://newsok.com/travis-ford-teeng-akol-has-work-to-do/article/3375964?custom_click=lead_story_titleMaybe Thornton will be 'the one that got away', but even the big schools know that you only take academic chances on STUD talent. If Coach believed that Thornton was a difference maker in this class, I guarantee he gets admitted. Read between the lines in his comments and you get the feeling that he cooled on the kid at some point in the process and nobody went to the wall for him with the committee. LOL It's not like we're DUKE! If a kid is good for the NCAA he's good enough to play football at USF. As an alum this really is aggravating. Folks need to get their heads out of their butts! Football exists to market a school and MAKE $$$. Leave the academic stuff to the honors program. We're having a hard enough time competing as it is without shooting ourselves in the foot. Treating **** recruits like this is a perfect way to lose one in the future. Now we've set a trend of hyping up a kid to sign only to eventually throw him out with the trash...How embarrassing... no big surpriseis it

Also some people are blaming coaches for not know what committee is looking for, well in my opinion the committee is looking to save their !@##! and not trying to help get a kid an education and that is why USF will always be a second rate school in FL. It's not Giddens and don't think for a second that Coach would ever let a Giddens level talent get to this situation.
