Big East eliminates Rutgers women's home game against Connecticut for 2009-10 season

by M.A. Mehta/The Star-Ledger

UConn coach Geno Auriemma and Maya Moore won't be making their annual stop in Piscataway next season.

The Big East announced Monday that the Rutgers women's basketball team will not play Big East rival Connecticut twice in the 2009-2010 season for the first time in five seasons.

The Scarlet Knights will instead face Syracuse twice. The national champion Huskies will face Notre Dame twice.

The Rutgers-UConn rivalry has been one of the most interesting/compelling in women's college basketball in recent years. So, why break up a good thing? Why not maximize your most attractive rivalry?

Like it or not, the Big East will do whatever it takes to placate ND.  The football and bowl tie-in arrangements are an example.  Sadly for women's basketball in the BE, and in particular Rutgers, this is yet another example.

I don't see the big deal. There should be a rotation every season in who a women's basketball team plays twice.

ND already knows they are at the front of the line for the 9th member of the Big East.

What on earth are you talking about? People ceased taking smazza seriously forever ago, but to see his stupid point echoed is alarming.

How, exactly, is Notre Dame being "placated" by this? Where does it say Notre Dame asked for it? Why should the same two teams play each other twice over and over under this scheduling system?

Exactly.  And unfortunately.  A pox on Rudy Rutiger and Knute Rockne movies for creating the Notre Dame monster.
