Garrison has been hurt, and rumor has had him gone for a while.  Peoples is not a BCS talent, left NC ST to find the competition here just as tough, hes no real loss.  Jenkins would have been a Senior, and was a solid special teamer, but again no really big deal.  Smiley was the primary back-up to Selvie, but with Buie back for another year, Bedford and Marshall coming in bigger and stronger than him, and Chris Robinson (imo) poised to be a great edge rusher, its not too big of dissapointment. Peguese was a high school lb trying to make the transition to dt, but by all accounts a very hard worker and promising player,  with the lack of experience at dt, he probably would have had the biggest impact....

i dont think usf was counting on these guys for alot of playing time

We can bring in up to 25 in a given year, excluding transfers or walk-ons who are now on scholarship.  Given that we signed 22 we could have 3 more if the total on scholarship is less than 85 which I believe it is.  We may have 3 more for this year, but you can expect that they will be more likely used for walkons.

Assuming everyone makes grades, USF already has a full class of 25 coming in. There were 22 on signing day, and they've added Theo Wilson and Damien Edwards since then, plus one of the other two January enrollees (either Charlton Sinclair or Trent Pupello) counts toward this class.

These holes will be filled by top quality players - best in class/position.  We will be much improved next year in the secondary.  Not as quick/fast but quite deep.

Yikes, thats going to hurt the depth for sure.  Garrison most likely would have seen major playing time, while Peguese and Peoples most likely would see the field on special teams.  This is not good.

usf shoukd have redshirt freshman and true freshman ready to step in and do better than these 5 leaving

I would agree.

Let's be fair here though-- playing sports in college is no cake walk. Losing 4 or 5 guys out of 100-105 on the team, who decide to go elsewhere or who quit playing is not too unusual.

Personally I think it is still part of the talent we bring in being better than what is here.  A kid like Peoples may have thought he was going to come in and be the man and was surprised at how good the kids already here were.  Julian Riley found that out as will Trent Pupello.  All these kids have to do what is best for them, and sometimes it may be better elsewhere (Chad Simpson).

agreed..no longer can these kids from other D1 schools come in and take over whatever position they play. Peoples was down on the depth chart behind some very talented LB's and would have ended his career rarely seeing the field (Julian Riley).

On signing day Leavitt said that this was the first year where we lost some top recruits because they didn't think they'd get a chance to play early. That says a lot about our current depth at many positions.

on the other hand, who wants a recruit who is afraid of having to earn his starting position in the first place?

Grothe didn't shy away from competing with Carlton Hill (granted Matt redshirted while Carton played that first season). That's the type of player we want-- tough and ready to battle. I'm not suggesting USF is a boot camp--- but that it takes hard work and diligence to make it on this team. I think that can be said of plenty of big time programs-- so we are heading in the right direction.

We also seem to ignore stars/recruiting ranking stuff versus our coaches own opinions on players. I think we go a little deeper than some schools in evaluating what kind of person these players currently are and what kind of potential they have.
