Conflicting reports on McCarney, S. AlabamaIs USF defensive line coach Dan McCarney going to be the first head coach at South Alabama? It depends on which Alabama newspaper you're reading.

The Birmingham News, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele had pulled his name out of consideration for the USA job. The paper reported that McCarney was the "other finalist" and had "the inside track" to be the Jaguars' first coach.

However, the Mobile Register (USA is located in Mobile) reported Monday morning that USA athletic director Joe Gottfried had not heard from Steele about pulling his name out, and that as of Sunday night, three finalists were still in consideration, suggesting that even if Steele were out, an unknown third finalist may still be in the mix.

McCarney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Monday morning. USA isn't expected to make a formal announcement until Thursday, so their choice doesn't lose recruits at his current job.Posted by Greg Auman at 10:22:42 AM on February 4, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)

Obviously, that differs slightly from Brett's article.  Well, this is going to be interesting.

can't he wait three more days so recruiting is over!

To sit on this info until the prospects "sign on the dotted line" would be dishonest as hell and embarass me as an alumnus.  The timing sucks but he probably had a window of time with which to accept and, at the end of the day, McCarney's and USF's reputations matter most.

Personally, I think that McCarney could have done better if he waited one more year but maybe he's inspired by the task at hand at USA.

It doesn't sound like he's been offered the job yet...maybe just speculation at this point.

Seems like McMurphy has word to bye bye McCarney. He's gonna be missed. Wish we could just give him Gregory

University of South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney apparently will be named the first coach at the University of South Alabama. McCarney and Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele were considered the two finalists and the Birmingham News reported Monday that Steele had withdrawn from consideration.

I wonder if the 'Bama boosters talked Steele out of it.

I guess it wasn't so APPARENT after all. LOL

Another half-ass job of reporting, right before signing day.  ::)

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
