USC in negotiations to move home games to Pasadena

LOS ANGELES -- University of Southern California administrators are negotiating with Rose Bowl officials for USC to begin playing home games in Pasadena next year.

A potential lease agreement would be considered at the Dec. 6 meeting of the Rose Bowl Operating Committee, USC officials said in a written statement.

"Although we have been a faithful tenant of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for 80 years, we must now seek other alternatives for the good of our football program and our fans," USC senior vice president for administration Todd R. Dickey said. "The Coliseum has not benefited from substantive physical upgrades or preventative maintenance for more than 10 years because the Commission has focused on attracting an NFL team that would renovate the stadium."

USC would have to share the Rose Bowl with its rival, University of California, Los Angeles, which already plays home games in Pasadena.

UCLA issued a less than enthusiastic statement regarding the proposal.

"UCLA's long-term lease protects its position as the primary tenant," the statement read. "In the context of its ongoing partnership with the Rose Bowl, UCLA is willing to review any proposal regarding an additional tenant, after which UCLA would enter into the necessary discussions with both the City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl regarding the feasibility of such an arrangement."

USC has been seeking control of its current home, the Memorial Coliseum. It has offered more than $100 million over 10 years to fund repairs and restoration.

"We want our football program to stay at the Coliseum," USC director of athletics Mike Garrett said. "But, as we all know, the Coliseum needs significant upgrades to provide fans with the Trojan game experience they deserve. We'll keep working to stay in the Coliseum, but until we have full support from the [Los Angeles] Coliseum Commission, we're forced to pursue the option of playing in the Rose Bowl."

The Coliseum has rejected the school's offer as it attempts to attract a National Football League team as a permanent tenant.

The Trojans began playing football in the Coliseum in 1923. The site has hosted two Olympics (X and XIII), two Super Bowls (I and VII) and a World Series (1959).

The Los Angeles area hasn't had an NFL team since after the 1994 season when the Raiders returned to Oakland and the Anaheim-based Rams moved to St. Louis.

Los Angeles city leaders have said they want to build a new stadium within the historic venue's walls at a cost of $800 million.

The Commission has offered the Trojans a two-year lease and was willing to offer longer stays if the team asks for one, the stadium's general manager Pat Lynch told the Los Angeles Times.

But USC officials said they wanted an agreement that would include improvements to the facility and an operating lease.

Rose Bowl manager Darryl Dunn said the venue's staff would seek an arrangement with USC officials, as long as UCLA agreed to it.

"If it doesn't work for UCLA, it's not going to work for us," he said.

That's a ploy to get upgrades.  The rose bowl is old, it has tiny seating space, and I think to use the bathroom you have to leave the stadium; at least it used to be that way.

I wouild still love to see USF play in the rose bowl game some day.

Go Bulls!

The Los Angeles Coliseum Commission are complete fools.

They are not getting an NFL team any time soon unless the NFL (and FOX - who would want an NFC team to get the LA TV market) forces a team to move to LA.  The city of LA does not care if they have an NFL team, and they refuse to pay for a stadium, tax breaks, etc.  That is a commendable position of the city.  They know that LA's reputation and standing in the world does not depend on an NFL team.

USC is offering "more than $100 million over 10 years to fund repairs and restoration"?  That is very generous compared to what the NFL wants, which is a free ride from the tax payers.

I would bet that if it came down to it, USC would move to the Rose Bowl for 2 years.  The LA Coliseum Commission would see the loss of revenue as well as no NFL team, and then they would fold to USC's demands.

Come on, you know better than that.  The Coliseum is across the street from USC (see map here).  This situation is no different than if these conditions were true for USF:

  • the old Tampa Stadium was across the street from USF - maybe were the mall is at
  • Tampa did not have an NFL team anymore - maybe Bucs moved to Memphis in the late 80's
  • USF played at the stadium across the street and the city filled the stadium for every home game
  • Some local yutz on the TSA - wanting to make a name for himself/herself - refuses to fix up the Tampa Stadium until Tampa gets a NFL team
  • USF has offered millions to fix up the stadium, but the yutz on the TSA cares more about his/her legacy and refuses the money
  • USF gets tired of the B.S. and threatens to move their home games to Tropicana Field

USC's current situation is perfect. No pro team to compete with(only occupants) that leads to being THE football event in L.A, an off campus stadium technically but it's walking distance from campus which is even better b/c whether or not to allow alcohol sales is not an issue. I think their fans would be pretty upset if they moved

You're reading far too much into this situation.  USC may have offered money, but I am sure that goes with becoming the primary tenant -- as the same line says USC wants to "control" their stadium.

People here would rather have a bare-bones OCS than rent a premiere, state-of-the-art NFL stadium... well... USC is looking at playing in UCLA's home stadium... (which is ALSO an off-campus stadium)...
