Source: Duke football coach Roof fired

KEN TYSIAC

Duke has fired football coach Ted Roof, a source with knowledge of the firing told the Observer on Monday morning on condition of anonymity.

The school has called a news conference for 2 p.m. today to discuss the future of the program.

Roof, 6-45 after four-plus seasons at Duke, was 1-11 this season and has lost 25 games in a row against ACC opponents. He said last week that he hoped to return.

Another ACC school, Georgia Tech, also is holding a 2 p.m. news conference to discuss its coach's future.

The Atlanta Journal & Constitution is reporting on its web site that coach Chan Gailey has been fired. Gailey is 68-43 in his sixth season at Georgia Tech.

He has won exactly seven games in five of his six seasons and was 9-5 in 2006 with a trip to the ACC championship game. Under Gailey, Georgia Tech is 0-6 against rival Georgia.
