Tradition? As I remind you, I am University of Florida, 1975. During my time there, the Florida-Georgia game was NEVER attached to the connotations of a cocktail party. And the University of South Florida became USF to those of us in the Tampa-Clearwater area (where I grew up) in the 1960s, shortly after it came into existence.

Thats a different animal though.  The media since their inception has taken to calling them FIU where in our case has started calling us south florida.  We're asking/telling them what we want to call us  when it comes to being called USF rather than what they have been calling us.  Basically it would be like FIU saying we dont want to be FIU we want to be Florida International.
