Painfully Obvious: USF Not Quite There Yet

By TONY FABRIZIO

CINCINNATI - University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt figured that even if his team lost Sunday night's nationally televised game against Cincinnati, the exposure would be good for recruiting.

His logic was that potential recruits would see that the Bulls need help.

Well, if Leavitt is right, the phones already should be ringing in the school's football offices.

Actually, USF's 23-6 loss to the Bearcats wasn't as much about talent deficiencies as it was self-destruction. But it did show that USF has a long way to go before it can be counted among the best teams in its conference.

thats not what i expected to be said there.  i thought it would be like we will prove to the nation we are the real deal and players should come here.  That statement sounds like we have given up on this season.  looked like it last night too

Leavitt said last week that the national TV can work for you either way -- if you win, makes you look good for recruits; if you lose, you tell them how you really need their help. He's got a sell planned either way ...

The recruits might think - "what kind of bonehead coach calls a fake punt when they are only 9 points down and almost an entire quarter to play?"

Maybe a potential future kicker might think - "Gee if I miss a few field goals, will the coach forgo an easy chip shot field goal to go up 3 - 2 before half time because he has no faith in his kickers, or will he try to make a risky 4th down conversion when the running game was shut down all first half?"
