How often have we been told -- mostly by coaches -- that you can't win with a freshman quarterback? Several players are exposing that notion for what it really is: An excuse for coaches to buy time.

The five freshmen quarterbacks of influence this year:

1. Matt Grothe, South Florida

The Bulls' redshirt freshman has a star quality about him -- and has already proven himself as a playmaker. USF is 4-2 largely because he has thrown for 1,230 yards and eight TDs and leads the team in rushing with 422 yards and seven scores.

Grothe didn’t even begin the year as the starter, but he has sparked the Bulls with his competitiveness and scrambling ability. In Saturday’s blowout of Connecticut, he was 12-of-15 for 146 yards and a touchdown, adding 82 yards and three scores on the ground.
