Connecticut  (2-2) at  South Florida (3-2)

7 PM EST GamePlan Saturday October 7th

Why to watch: Both programs are coming off losses, and considering the way the rest of the league is playing in the first half, both need a win here to keep pace in the hunt for a bowl berth.  South Florida fought hard for four quarters before falling to Rutgers on national TV last Friday night in a fun game, but it was still a loss.  Now, the Bulls will be trying to prevent a three-game losing streak after beginning the year 3-0 and with so much promise.  UConn appears to be losing the head of steam it had at the end of the 2004 season.  Yeah, last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year, but progress was anticipated in 2006.  It hasn’t happened.  With a ferocious second-half schedule still to come, the Huskies are in danger of falling below .500 after getting sucker punched at home by Navy last weekend.

Why UConn might win: The Huskies can’t stop the run, but that won’t haunt them against a South Florida team that has no absolutely running game unless the quarterback is improvising.  UConn, however, is No. 4 in the country in pass efficiency defense, which will limit the Bulls’ ability to move the chains.  They’ll also pressure freshman Matt Grothe, who’s thrown seven interceptions in the last four games, into forcing passes and turning the ball over.

South Florida might win: Ever since blowing I-AA Rhode Island, UConn has had serious issues on offense that will not be solved against a veteran Bull defense that’s yet to allow more than 22 points in a game this year.  The Huskies are a disaster at quarterback, which will allow USF’s speedy linebackers Stephen Nicholas, Ben Moffitt and Pat St. Louis to hone in on RB Terry Caulley and eliminate UConn’s only threat on offense.

Who to watch: Grothe is, well, growing every week that he plays for the Bulls.  Yeah, he still makes freshman mistakes, but he also makes big plays with his arm and his legs, while exuding an intensity that’s becoming infectious.  The future face of the South Florida program is on his way to becoming a Freshman All-American in 2006.

What will happen: After getting demoralized by Navy, this is a bad spot for a UConn team that’s going to labor all year against quality defenses.  The Bulls will clamp down on the Huskies, getting enough on offense from Grothe and WR Ean Randolph for win No. 4.

CFN Prediction: South Florida 26 ... Connecticut 16 ... Line: USF -6.5

I'm pretty sure it's in reference to the new talk show.  It's terrible.
