Meier uncertain for USF

LAWRENCE - Quarterback Kerry Meier's wounded right arm has his status up in the air for Saturday's home game with South Florida.

"He's been limited," Kansas coach Mark Mangino said after Wednesday's practice. "He's day-to-day."

Early reports from the doctors had been favorable after Meier injured his arm in last Friday night's double-overtime loss at Toledo. But Mangino wasn't so optimistic Wednesday.

Meier was injured on the first play of the fourth quarter but finished the game. After a defender rolled over his arm, the redshirt freshman threw two of his four interceptions and muffed a handoff.

It wasn't until after the game and watching video that Mangino said he realized Meier's range of motion was affected.

I hope we can figure out a way to slow down their running game.  It looks like we will see plenty of it.

Isn't his back up last years starter?

That would be why there's a Read More link... ;-)

Meier's replacement would be senior Adam Barmann, who has started 11 games over his career but has struggled with consistency. He lost the starting job to Meier in the spring.

"Adam has kept working hard, so he's doing well," Mangino said. "He looks sharp. I told you, he's improved greatly.

"He's been more patient in his reads. He's got a better grasp on all the routes and throwing all the routes we ask of him. He's just matured. He's been through the battles and understands."

Mangino said there wouldn't be any tweaking of the game plan to fit Barmann.

Barmann started a few games, but Jason Swanson was the starter for most of the season, including the only successful parts.

KANSAS | Freshman’s status is uncertain

Meier might sit

Jayhawk QB’s arm injury is worse than originally thought; Barmann may get the call on Saturday night.

By JASON KING

The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | He won’t discuss Kerry Meier’s injury in detail, but Kansas coach Mark Mangino will at least say this: It’s worse than initially thought.

Mangino said earlier this week that he expected Meier to play in Saturday’s game against South Florida. But as he headed toward the locker room following Wednesday’s practice, Mangino didn’t sound nearly as optimistic about the health of his freshman quarterback.

“He’s day-to-day,” Mangino said. “If he can play, great. If he can’t, we’ll go to the next person and get him ready. I’m not going to speculate at this point.”

Mangino said senior Adam Barmann would be KU’s starter if Meier is unable to play against the Bulls, who enter Saturday’s contest touting a 3-0 record following last week’s road victory over Conference USA power Central Florida.

Losing Meier could be a huge blow for the 2-1 Jayhawks, who are in desperate need of a win heading into next week’s Big 12 opener at Nebraska.

“It’s part of football,” Mangino said. “(Meier) deals with it well. We all do.”

Meier’s injury occurred during the fourth quarter of Kansas’ 37-31 double overtime loss at Toledo on Friday. Mangino said Meier’s arm got “rolled up” when he was at the bottom of a pile.

KU physicians noticed bruising when examining Meier on the sideline. But Meier insisted he was OK when Mangino asked him if he could continue.

Meier ended up throwing a pair of costly interceptions that led to the Jayhawks’ loss. The first was returned 84 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Meier was picked off again in the second overtime when he underthrew a fade pass to Marcus Henry in the end zone.

After watching a replay of the game Saturday, Mangino said it was clear that Meier’s injury affected his range of motion.

“I made a coaching decision to leave him in the game,” Mangino said. “If there are any turnovers that were thought to be attributed to him, attribute them to me.”

Meier has thrown a league-high seven interceptions in KU’s first three games, but he’s also passed for 538 yards and six touchdowns and run for four scores.

Asked how much Meier has been able to practice this week, Mangino said: “He’s been limited. We’ll just keep going to day-to-day. It might be game-time (before we decide) and it might be tomorrow. I just don’t know.”

If Meier can’t play, Mangino said he feels comfortable handing the job to Barmann, a West Platte graduate who has started 13 games during his career.

“Adam is getting a lot of work,” Mangino said. “He looks sharp. He’s improved greatly. Over the winter he’s worked hard and he worked hard in the spring and all through fall camp.

“He’s been more patient in his reads this year. He’s got a better grasp on all the routes in our offense. He’s matured. He’s been through the battles. He understands. He’s a guy who really has a good feel for what’s taking place.”

Mangino said starting a different quarterback wouldn’t cause Kansas to alter its plan of attack.

“The game plan wouldn’t change at all,” Mangino said. “When you have a quarterback that’s day-to-day, you can’t change things in midstream. We feel good about our game plan regardless of whoever plays.”

Darn, I am hoping for Meier to start.  His play, and over-confidence in his own athletic ability would probably give our defense more of a chance to exploit.  Meier's skilled, and I can see in 2-3 years could be great, but for now he seems to have trouble seeing the whole field, seems to want to do to much, and gets rattled.

Wow, their QB situation sounds eerily similar to ours. Phenom freshman wins out the job over last year's starting senior. I could be totally over reacting here, but does anyone wonder if the KU coaches are reporting Meier's injury to the press to throw off S. Florida's expectations for which QB they will be using in our upcoming game?

you have to prepare for both (or all three) regardless.

what will suck is that IF USF WINS and Meier doesn't start, the Negative Nellies will claim USF was lucky to win that KU wasn't at full strength. And even if he does start, they will remind us repeatedly how he was hurt.

You can't win with this ******* people. Exhausting, exasperating--- they are all things and nothings.
