USF’s Jessica Dickson Tabbed Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American

Tampa, FL (March 29, 2006) – After she turned in the most successful season – for an individual – in the history of the University of South Florida women’s basketball program, standout Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) was named to the Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America team.

This season, Dickson helped lead the Bulls to a 19-12 record along with a share of sixth place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 9-7 record and an appearance in their first-ever NCAA Tournament. On the year she averaged 22 points per game which was tops in the league and good enough for third in the nation. That ranking was the highest that a BIG EAST women’s basketball player has ever finished. Dickson led the nation in scoring until the final weekend of the regular season when LSU’s Siemone Augustus over took her for the lead.

The 5-11 junior forward shot 42 percent from the field and was one of the top free throw shooters in the league hitting 86.5 percent from the charity stripe on the year. She scored in double figures in 30 of the teams 31 games this season and poured in a career high 37 points in a 66-65 loss to No. 10/9 Rutgers on January 11 in the Sun Dome. She also tallied 20 or more points in 18 of her 31 games and 30 or more six times.

Dickson also set a new school single season scoring record netting 682 points during the 2005-06 campaign shattering the old record of 549 set by former Bull Wanda Guyton during the 1988-89 season.

Dickson ended the season with 1,755 career points in three season’s which is good enough for third on the schools all-time scoring list, just nine points shy of passing Angie Snyder who is second with 1,773. She is also just 66 points from becoming the women’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer. Guyton holds that distinction netting 1,820 points in her career with the “Green and Gold.”

In addition she averaged 5.8 rebounds per game which was third on the team.

Dickson was a two-time BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week and was named to the league’s weekly honor roll seven times. For her efforts this season, Dickson was named to the All-BIG EAST Conference first team.

guys, i'd say honorable mention was the right call on dickson. check out these 15 names that made the top three teams:

Oklahoma center Courtney Paris

LSU senior Seimone Augustus

North Carolina junior Ivory Latta

Rutgers senior Cappie Pondexter

Baylor senior Sophia Young.

Tennessee freshman Candace Parker

Duke's Monique Currie

Ohio State's Jessica Davenport

Stanford's Candice Wiggins

Maryland's Crystal Langhorne

DePaul's Khara Smith

LSU's Sylvia Fowles

Georgia's Tasha Humphrey

Utah's Kim Smith

Temple's Candice Dupree.

that's only 15 girls honored ahead of her -- the top 10 are very tough to argue with, all top players on elite eight caliber teams. you could make a case that dickson could be ahead of khara smith or kim smith, but there are other really strong players in the honorable mentions.

also look at how dickson trailed off in the last month -- she had to carry a huge amount of that offense for a tough stretch. With everything she and USF gained in national name recognition this year, she'll be in good position to be in the top 15 as a senior.

But Khara Smith ahead of Dickson? If I remember right, Dickson ate it up against DePaul. I just think being top 5 in scoring , AND being the majority season top scorer in the country lends more credence than an HM.

One game does not make a season. She will have her moment next year.

joe-you are wrong

one game can define a career

usf needs to step up when they are in post season tournaments

postseason performance is  how great athletes are judged

south florida is not known and unless usf distinguishes itself our players will not get love
