Wow. That's unfortunate. Even more unfortunate is that this has happened before. Scary. :-/

hate to see stuff like this happen. Campus is usually known to be a safe place for students. Thanks for posting.

Let's see, 40000 students on campus every year + 5000 faculty/staff, 12 years since last shooting ( a domestic dispute).  That's 2 shootings in 12 years and about one shooting for every 270000 people that come onto campus.  Doesn't really sound like an epidemic to me.   ::)  Sorry the rate isn't as low as it is at Ohio university.

The last time it happened it happened between non students who were on campus for a concert. The guy was stalking his ex-girlfriend and shot her by the dorms next to the student health center. Neither one had any affiliations with USF. I still remember we went to check out the scene, they had completely bleached two of those big concrete squares.

There was some terrible thing that happened up in our department offices some years ago, too. I don't know the details, but I guess it was pretty gruesome and it's why we keep a lot of the doors and hallways locked now.

Murder near Magnolia

A former USF student and staff member was fatally shot near Magnolia Apartments in the first on-campus murder since 1994.

By Chris Gardner

February 10, 2006

A 57-year-old man was fatally shot in a parking lot next to Magnolia Apartments on campus late Thursday night, according to University Police spokesman Michael Klingebiel.

The victim has been identified as Ronald Stem by the Tampa Police Department, which is cooperating with UP on the investigation.

At 11:44 p.m. UP responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired and found Stem in Parking Lot 24. The victim was found dead on arrival from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. No suspects have been named in the case.

According to Klingebiel, there is at least one witness being questioned.

Klingebiel said the victim was a former USF student and former staff member and used to live in Magnolia Apartments. He added that the victim has had no official relationship with the school since 2004.

A release from UP said the victim often visited old friends in the Magnolia Apartment complex.

Klingebiel said at the scene of the crime that both UP and TPD would be stepping up patrols in that area to ensure students feel safe on campus.

“We’re trying to increase the police presence in this area,†Klingebiel said.

The scene was cleared of crime tape and the parking lot was opened back up to the public at approximately 4:00 a.m.

Stem lived in Magnolia Apartments from summer 2003 through summer 2004. According to Lara Wade, interim director of media relations, Stem worked for residence services as a part-time student assistant from May 2004 to August 2004.

The last murder to occur at USF was in 1994 when a man shot his girlfriend in the head after a concert at the Special Events Center.

Student Affairs has recommended students walk in groups, keep friends informed of their schedule and whereabouts and remember to lock doors of residence halls, apartments and vehicles.

USF has two offices open and ready to counsel students with concerns.

The USF Counseling Center for Human Development can be reached at (813) 974-2831 and the Advocacy Program can be reached at (813) 974-5757.
