Borders Leads Tampa to Victory Over #8 Florida Southern

Lakeland, Fla. – Mark Borders scored a team-high 23 points as the University of Tampa (11-2, 2-0) men’s basketball team posted a 65-54 road victory over eighth-ranked Florida Southern (9-3, 1-1).

Tampa led for all 40 minutes of the game as Chris Evans scored 17 points in the first-half to help the Spartans to a 33-19 halftime lead. Evans finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds along with three blocked shots. Borders, the Sunshine State Conference leader in assists, led the Spartans with seven.

The Spartans shot 40.0 percent from the field and held the Moccasins to a 30.8 percent mark. Tampa’s defense also held Florida Southern’s leading scorer Michael Simms to two points. Tampa also outrebounded Florida Southern 40-31.

Tampa is back in action on Saturday as it hosts Lynn at 4:00 pm.

TAMPA RUNS PAST FLORIDA SOUTHERN

LAKELAND - Mark Borders scored 23 points, and Christopher Evans had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the University of Tampa to a 65-54 win over eighth-ranked Florida Southern on Wednesday night.

Hurley Dunbar had given Florida Southern (9-3, 1-1 Sunshine State Conference) an 8-7 lead with a three-point play 2:40 into the game, but Tampa (11-2, 2-0) dominated the rest of the first half. Starting with a basket by Evans, and 3-pointers by Borders and Marcus Bright, the Spartans reeled off 12 straight points and outscored the Moccasins 20-2 over the next 11-plus minutes. The Mocs missed 15 consecutive shots during that span and got their only points on two free throws by Dunbar.

Florida Southern finished the first half shooting just 23 percent from the floor and trailed 33-19, its lowest halftime score in the modern day history of the series.

The Moccasins started to climb back into the game with their defense in the second half, limiting the Spartans to only four points in the first 10 minutes. Borders helped snap Tampa out of its slump though by scoring on three straight possessions, one of them a 3-pointer, to give his team a 45-29 lead with 7:28 remaining.

Florida Southern still trailed by 16 with just over three minutes to play, but was able to cut that gap to eight on a 3-pointer by Dale Parsons with 1:13 on the clock. The Mocs nearly forced a turnover on the ensuing in-bounds play, but were forced to foul when the Spartans just broke the press. Tampa then clinched the game by going seven-for-eight from the free throw line in the final minute.

In addition to his 23 points, Borders also handed out seven assists while going seven-for-14 from the floor and seven-for-eight from the line. He scored 14 of his points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Evans notched his sixth double-double of the season, tying him with Borders for the league lead.

The Moccasins also had two players score in double figures, with Parsons putting 19 on the board and Allen Gilberry scoring 12. Most of that came from the free throw line, however, where Parsons was 11-for-14 and Gilberry was six-for-eight.

Both teams will play against Saturday night with the Moccasins facing Florida Gulf Coast in a non-conference game in Lakeland at 7:30, and the Spartans hosting Lynn University in an SSC game at 4:00.
