Ran across this looking for something else and found it hugely intriguing on what the trickle down effects would have been 30-40 years later ...

Imagine the College Football Playoff beginning next season not with five, but six major conferences. The Big East is still at the table, but not splintered into a basketball...

What a great article! Really drives home how a decision at x-time can come back to bite twenty or thirty years down the road! It seems reasonable to me that PSU would have anchored the media in the NE. And let's not forget, had this come to fruition, I can think of one particular school who would NOT have had a BE footprint. 🤔

And that opens a whole nother line of discussion that I'll not be touching at this time ...

C'mon! Why do you insist on wearing a helmet every time you ride?! Roll that throttle, man! You know you want to! Give in! :FIREdevil:

2 things here - the article discusses Cincinnati, but ignores USF

The article also ignores the A10, where Penn State wound up for basketball

The A10 could have easily sponsored football in the 80s and been respectable, with PSU, Va Tech, WVU, Rutgers and maybe even Pitt (who left the A10 in ‘82)

Maybe even my alma matter (GWU) would have brought back football to compete in that league

Great stuff!

Soon as I read "Fascinating article", I knew it wouldn't be behind the Tampa Bay Times paywall...

Do you have licensing for that?  Seems Mr. Downey, Jr. should be making big bucks on you. :roflmao:

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
