I believe it was Tom Landry who when asked about his penchant for running trick plays in the early Cowboys days said that football should not be just about trying to outpersonnel the other team, especially when you were short in the personnel department. In short, the trick plays are an outgrowth of not believing that we can outtalent the other team in a particular game or situation. We ran no trick plays against UCF, FAMU or Syracuse (I'm going by the radio feed so I do not remember exactly); all of whom we were clearly better than. The end around at Pitt with 6 minutes left and that atrocious reverse pass with Denson at UConn were both on 3rd down when conventional play calling failed on first and second. I am sure we will see one or two this weekend. Also, we did not run "reverses" against Louisville, they were all "end arounds" as there was no change in direction as Amarri kept the ball all three times. Why do we run trick plays on third down? We should run them on 2nd down if we run them at all. I for one think we rely too much on the tricks. They all worked against Louisville, but we really haven't had other success with them. Obviously coaches are telling their players to watch out for those against us. Do we run a slant pass at all? I'd rather see us run that play and execute it than another ill fated trick play.
